Well, now, this delectable piece of news almost escaped me. A former *Trump* official should be disbarred. A former official. What’s up with that? It seems to me a pretty extreme thing to put forward. From Raw Story:
The Washington, D.C. Bar’s board of professional responsibility recommendation that a former senior official for President Donald Trump be disbarred. Jeffrey Clark, Trump’s acting administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget, was handcuffed outside his home in summer 2022. Then-special counsel Jack Smith found he was among six co-conspirators who attempted to illegally overturn the results of the 2020 election and block a peaceful transfer of power.
WHAM. Busted. We know about all the efforts to overturn the 2020 election, but this is quite a development. Mr. Clark apparently didn’t fully consider what could happen to him in the years after his actions. Too bad for him. I wonder why it took so long for this to come about. After all, it has been more than four years.
In the final weeks of the first Trump administration, he nearly appointed Clark to serve as the acting attorney general, but other officials threatened to resign publicly resign if he did. Clark was also indicted in Georgia in 2023 on allegations of violating state racketeering laws and making false statements. He pleaded not guilty.
Yea, right. There must have been some pretty detailed information to even consider bringing the charges in Georgia, let alone doing so. He wasn’t the only one indicted, either. Even if you don’t remember all the names, surely you remember Trump’s mug shot? Oh, right, now you do. I believe Trump actually made some money from using that on merchandise to sell. But, I digress. Back to Mr. Clark.
“While dishonesty is always intolerable, the facts here are significantly aggravating to warrant disbarment: Respondent was prepared to cause the Justice Department to tell a lie about the status of its investigation of an important national issue (the integrity of the 2020 Presidential election),” the recommendation continued. “Lawyers cannot advocate for any outcome based on false statements and they certainly cannot urge others to do so. Respondent persistently and energetically sought to do just that on an important national issue. He should be disbarred as a consequence and to send a message to the rest of the Bar and to the public that such behavior will not be tolerated.”
Ouch! That pretty much lays it all out. I can’t see how he can escape this, given everything else in the article. If he manages to keep his law license, it will be a miracle. Too bad, so sad. I have no sympathy for anyone who tried to overturn the election, no matter who or where they are. It should stay that way. For all of us.
