The Washington Post is reporting that the White House is bunkered down in full panic mode over the fact that it appears that the Epstein matter isn’t going anywhere, no matter how many diversionary tactics that Trump throws out. It is scaring them to death, perhaps because the information in those files is so disastrous that – for the first time ever, it appears that there might be a real threat to Trump’s rule. His MAGAs didn’t care about the assault on the Capitol, they damn sure didn’t care that Trump was bribing Ukraine, but it appears that they might care about child rape and the conspiracy underneath to protect other “elites” – unbelievable that’s what it took, and they may not forgive the ultimate conspiracy theory. Hope is now a bit warranted.

From a report in the Post:

“I wouldn’t say it’s blown over,” said one. “It’s one of those things where, with a certain segment of the base, a very small segment of the base, it’s never going to die down, no matter what.”

There is an element of truth to this. Despite the fact that Trump could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue, it has always been a maxim that this is a 50-50 country and that there isn’t a ton of room on either side to put someone in real trouble. If a small segment, say one-quarter, of the MAGA population went against Trump on this one (And that’s fairly conservative, one might say one-third to one-half of the real MAGAs), it would put Trump in a nosedive that he might not survive. It does also seem true that this problem isn’t going anywhere until someone officially resolves it. It is possible that it won’t even take a quarter – the White House is preparing for the worst.

“It’s not going to be some huge revolt, but you’re going to see less lines at the rallies,” a second White House insider said. “All you need is 5 percent of these people to just get cynical, apathetic, lethargic, and we’re done.”

They should be scared, but it is actually a bit worse. It is tough to envision a scenario where something would scare off just five percent. If the issue is bad enough to change minds, it seems just as likely that five percent means it would lead to 25%. Either way, the White House is terrified.

We all know that Trump is worried. His latest statements look like he’s hedging, big time.

Trump is all for releasing the Epstein files as long as none of his rich pals are harmed.

How could things “hurt people unfairly?” The files are the files, if they mention someone who wasn’t involved, let them come forward and explain it. Beyond that, the fact that it was long ago and that Epstein is dead rings hollow, indeed, it’s perhaps more offensive. You can tell that Trump’s sympathies lie with the men who perpetrated it. From a possible pardon to Sean Combs to a million other things, Trump rarely sides with the victims. Perhaps he always sees himself as similar in using people and moving on – it sure looks like it.

“We’re not just sitting on our hands. There are things happening that are not public. Just because they’re not public doesn’t mean things aren’t happening.”

Here is what is not happening. A full release of the files for people to examine is not happening. Other than a few files already flagged as “fair” (In Trump’s judgment) we aren’t going to see much of anything coming out of official channels. But with 1,000 federal agents, people used to fighting crime and likely abhorred by child-trafficking, there is a whole ‘nother avenue by which this stuff might spill forward. We have already seen the release of Trump’s signature as pubic hair, that might be nothing relative to what’s been held back.

And there’s the rub, that is why the White House is so scared. They have a problem that they can’t chase off and Trump’s poll numbers are already plummeting, especially on this issue. It is possible that this issue isn’t the straw on the camel’s back. It is possible that it just sits there, haunting them until the country’s mood turns ever more sour. I repeat this all the time, some might be sick of it, but if the economy really starts to struggle, look for the tide to turn against Trump big time. His die hard cultish ones won’t turn – that would be an admission that they’d been “trumped” all along. But those who simply voted on a gut feeling about the economy, and there are plenty of those, will suddenly have no reason to support him and every reason to rise up in opposition. At that point, we may see Congress begin to move as 2026 begins to creep up.

Again, if the economy struggles, this issue may be the one that many Trump voters may use to wipe their hands of him. His shtick is already getting hold, he’s been around a long time and looks older as a lame duck. One senses that it won’t take nearly as much this time. The Epstein thing looms large on the horizon, just never setting.

No wonder they’re terrified.
