The Department of Justice is beginning to look like a combination of Alice In Wonderland and the French revolution, the way the heads are coming off and rolling. Maurene Comey, daughter to James Comey, got fired from the DOJ today. Likely some revenge against her dad is intended, but Ms. Comey was also a prosecutor in both the cases of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. Politico:
In recent weeks, President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi have faced a firestorm of criticism over their decision not to release additional files related to Epstein, the disgraced financier who was accused of running a child sex trafficking ring. Prosecutors in the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office, including Comey, charged Epstein in 2019 with sex trafficking of minors. He died by suicide in jail while awaiting trial on those charges.
Maxwell was convicted of sex trafficking and sentenced to 20 years in prison. She is appealing her conviction.
Comey’s firing also comes as the Trump administration is reportedly investigating her father, whom Trump has long reviled. The investigations apparently relate to James Comey’s role in the probe of links between Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia, as well as a recent Instagram post by James Comey that Trump allies saw as threatening to Trump.
OMFG. Do you want to know what the Instagram post was? It was seashells that spelled out “86 45.” Wow, major threat, that.
And in recent months, Maurene Comey has been the target of renewed attacks by voices in Trump’s right-wing base, including Laura Loomer, who called on Bondi to fire her in May. More recently, Loomer has been leading the MAGA base’s outcry over the Justice Department’s decision not to release further Epstein-related documents.
Maybe Loomer is in charge of hiring and firing now. Maybe she just puts names in a hat and draws them out. Who knows? As nutty as this misadministration is, rule nothing out. What I do find alarming though is that this would seem to indicate an escalation of harassment against James Comey. Trump’s threats to prosecute Comey, Brennan, anybody he doesn’t like are common. He’s a bully and a litigious one at that. But what happened today would seem part of a concerted effort to go after the former FBI Director, first by harassment and secondly by removing a relative from the institution who might possibly have insight into the investigation. That is alarming.
