Elon Musk seeks to do the heretofore impossible, and before anyone sneers at the effort, one had best get used to considering two important elements. Musk wants to form the long-sought third party in the American Constitutional system. Don’t get any hopes up as the third party will only make the Republicans look more centrist (But see below) because Musk wants bigger cuts in government spending. But before you look away at just another self-important proto-politician, consider the things that Musk has already done, which may have seemed impossible. He has formed a private space delivery company, one that makes money and breaks in new technology – landing a rocket on its ass to make it reuseable. And, unlike anyone before him, Musk has the money to simply float it as a serious trial balloon all by himself. The man is as odious and omnipresent as always, but the idea must be considered as a very real possibility.

The genesis of all this is the “Big Beautiful Bill,” which Musk considers indefensible. To be sure, it is. But Musk finds it unacceptable not for the millions thrown off healthcare, but because of the spending that it does keep. Some of this spending does have to go, but only to be plowed back into healthcare and natural resource conservation. Regardless, this is a line in the sand to Musk, as reported by Rawstory.

Musk continued his public meltdown over the president’s signature legislation, pledging on his X platform, “If this insane spending bill passes, the America Party will be formed the next day.”

“Our country needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people actually have a VOICE,” said Musk.

The outrageous disagreements in priorities between Trump and the Democrats just goes to show that Musk’s idea of a “uniparty” is as cynical as it gets. The bottom line is that the current Republican Party isn’t extreme enough for Musk.

“Every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing government spending and then immediately voted for the biggest debt increase in history should hang their head in shame!” wrote Musk. “And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”

The bill substantially reduces government in a way that most impacts the poor. We all know this. As said, it just doesn’t go far enough for Musk.

But given his track record, Musk does have to be taken seriously as a threat to the current system. But the “threat” is primarily to Republicans. No self-respecting Democrat is going to flirt with either party, and neither the GOP nor the new party will be considered truly moderate. Thus, any votes that Musk takes in this third-party endeavor will come from the Republican side. The idea could clear the lane to allow Democrats to take the House (Almost a given) and a real shot at the Senate, where Markowski’s possible departure, Collins’s ever-ready “concern,” and Tillis’s empty seat all threaten to swing seats over to the Democrats.

Musk may be dreaming in having a third-party with a ready chance at the presidency. But his third party may steal a seat or two (Perhaps Texas, where John Cornyn is hated by both sides, perhaps Florida, where Rubio’s old seat is more up for grabs). The third party likely won’t caucus with Republicans and – again, may only ensure that the Democrat is the highest vote getter.

The money alone that could be poured into this party’s start-up means that the idea should be considered a realistic threat to the system as it stands. The fact that Democrats will likely be the initial winners in such a scenario is great – so long as it lasts. Whether that advantage holds depends largely on Democrats finding an identity in “big good government,” the type that taxes the fck out of the rich and ensures that no one in the richest country on earth goes hungry or without healthcare.

Take this seriously, whatever the result. Just don’t count on this bill not passing in some form, making Musk’s threat a near-certainty.

Zoomers, we are always in need of donations. It’s been an especially rough month, and my own health has not been great these past few weeks, which just adds to the frustration. Anything you can spare will be immensely appreciated. And thank you to all who have donated generously already. Ursula

It also gives the Democrats a GREAT talking point/political ad concerning billionaires and taxes.

“Elon Musk apparently has so much money that he can just throw away a good chunk of it to fund a brand-new party but he still feels he’s paying too much in taxes. Imagine if all millionaires and billionaires–who are all free to spend untold millions of dollars in political campaigns–were to pay even half of that in taxes to help the people who really need the help and to help fund infrastructure repairs.” (Obviously, the pros could do a much better job but that serves as a starting point.)

It looks like it would hurt the Republicans more than the Democrats. However, I think it may be a mistake to think that Musk can’t attract any Democrats. There’s a certain kind of Democrat that thinks Andrew Yang is cool, and that’s the kind I’m talking about. Personally I do not think Yang is cool at all, and bear in mind that Musk supported Yang’s primary bid in 2020, and that Yang is collaborating with Musk right now on this third party thing.
