Unless you are Jeff Bezos, honeymoons never last forever, and yet, by all accounts, Trump should be at least enjoying some marginal return on his investment in the win he got last November. But, as is always in this country, the economy dictates whether a president is accepted and supported. In that respect, Trump’s loud back and forth on tariffs and their perceived or real impact on prices, as well as overall confidence in the economy, is running for cover, according to a new report in The Guardian. Things have turned “gruesome” quickly, and there is little end in sight. This is all before the wildly unpopular “Big Beautiful Bill” has even been passed with massive Medicaid cuts. The result is as you might predict.

In the sixth month of his second presidency, Trump’s domestic honeymoon is over. About 49% of voters approve of his handling of immigration while 47% disapprove but on the economy 43% approve and 54% disapprove.”

The immigration abuses haven’t hit home in red states yet, but almost undoubtedly will when “Numbers” need to be kept up. Meanwhile, it is really hard to turn an American economy around mid-stream. It is made even worse when people remember a pretty darned decent economy improving under Biden after dreaded COVID. In short, if Trump cannot get the economy back on track – and nothing indicates that he can- things will quickly fall apart even more.

“There’s two presidencies. The one on the domestic front is gruesome and involves long-drawn-out and disappointing negotiations with Congress and that’s exactly what Donald Trump is engaged in now. What emerges from Congress is not going to be as ‘big’ or ‘beautiful’ as he promised.”

“Meanwhile you’ve got staggering photographs of bombs falling from the sky, Donald Trump’s flamboyant description of what he’s achieved in Iran and Europe. That’s the kind of Hollywood performance that Donald Trump wants.”

But only when it works, and the report notes that Trump’s entire thunder was stolen when the report of marginal results leaked to the media. Now he is backpedaling hard, flailing away, and has nowhere to run:

“This is a classic deception. He’s like the carnival barker who’s waving his hands to keep the attention of the audience even as he’s hiding the part for the next trick. Politicians like to cover their tracks; there’s no covering the tracks here. There will be known cuts to widely used popular programmes like the healthcare for Medicaid and there will be no doubt as to who’s responsible. These are traceable, highly visible consequences of Donald Trump.”

No doubt as to who is responsible, no doubt. There will likely be a historic wave election in 2026 – we are due for a major correction without a presidential race getting in the way of a Congress that needs to reset. Of course, none of this can turn the economy around quickly, nor reduce drastic Medicaid cuts, until there are Democrats in charge.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of gruesome years ahead until that time rolls around.

Zoomers, we are always in need of donations. It’s been an especially rough month, and my own health has not been great these past few weeks, which just adds to the frustration. Anything you can spare will be immensely appreciated. And thank you to all who have donated generously already. Ursula

  1. Assuming Cheeto doesn’t suspend the constitution, and thereby free and fair elections, so he and his merry band of misanthropes can hold power ad infinitum, what could be the goal of this multi-front attack on all of government? I think it could be to break it so badly that it will take decades to recover, if it ever does.

One might say that government was already broken and with it dismantled, maybe we can build it back better. That could happen. But a more likely scenario, with billionaires around, throwing wads of cash at people with the intent of corrupting them to do their bidding, will be something even worse.

When people perform any act, regardless of how awful, and call it patriotism, we’re in deep water.

  2. “Now he is backpeddling hard, flailing away, and has nowhere to run:”

Not intending this to be nitpicky but it’s “backpedaling.” “Backpeddling” is what’s typically known as an “egg-corn”–a wrong word or phrase that sounds like the correct word or phrase. Like “laundry mat” for “laundromat” or “tow the line” for “toe the line.”

Of course, given Drumpf’s MO, “backpeddling” doesn’t seem too off the mark (after all, he does “peddle” a lot of stuff, so taking back what he was trying to sell would basically be “backpeddling”).

  3. Forget about “backpedaling” and “Backpeddling”! What is needed is a good “Paddling”. As much a spossible in Congress and Courts but properly in ’26 to set up ’28. Passing thought: what about Project ’26/28 to trump Project 25?
