Well, this is both interesting and sort of amusing. It seems Marco Rubio is trying to flex his muscle and dictate right and wrong to Germany. Quite publicly in fact, taking them to task on Elon Musk’s RWNJ platform Xitter. The German government officially made it clear that as far as they are concerned whatever roles Trump thrusts him in to, Marco Rubio is as far as they’re concerned what Trump dubbed him back in 2016 – “Little Marco.”
Last week I wrote about how Trump was about to get b!tch-slapped by another ally, in this case Australia. I’d described how Trump had been full of himself, taking credit for driving Trudeau out of power and that conservatives in Canada were poised to retake power with their own Trumpian-Lite guy and Party. Canada voters resoundingly NO to that. Down under in Australia until recently it looked like the ruling liberals would be out and THEY would have them some Trumpism but voters there this past weekend did the same thing Canada did and said ‘F**k off mate’ to their own version of Trump and Trumpism.
What I didn’t get into was how in Europe our allies have been doing their own version of NO to our President. He does after all PAINT HIS FACE ORANGE and sane people look and start wondering about him and America. A couple of months ago German voters did their own rebuke of Trump. Recent comments from Marco Rubio and J.D. Vance have caused their government to double down on rejecting Trumpism!
In this article from Salon its author lays out how the world (the free world at least) is increasingly rejecting Trumpism. Which means Trump himself and don’t think for a second news hound Trump hasn’t seen what’s been going on. It’s well worth the five minutes or so to read. It covers in more detail what I’ve written about regarding Canada and Australia. It also details what’s been going on here at home. More importantly it also makes some important observations. For example the right-wing in this country salivating over the prospect of creating a Christian nationalist/tech-utopia (depending on who you talk to). And working together to advance their agenda of destroying the rule of law, our Constitutional framework, the government provided (not enough) safety net and so on. You know, all that “leftist” stuff.
There’s been concern since back during the first Trump administration about democracies sliding towards authoritarian rule. Enough have done so it’s a cause for concern and during his term Joe Biden worked like hell to stop that trend. I think with perspective history will judge him well for his four years having provided a contrast to Trump and Trumpism. Because it’s pretty clear that, as I said that trend away from democratic norms in free countries is clearly reversing. As the linked article makes clear voters in other countries are letting their leaders know they DON’T like what Trump and his toadies have been and are up to.
The linked article also points out the fact that the United States is still the most powerful both economically and militarily. That means they don’t have much choice but to figure out a way to work through things. Trump’s whole thing is based on his belief the world has been ‘ripping us off’ and that the world order was created for that exact purpose. The thing is, the established world order was created and maintained by US! Helping other countries, spreading democratic values and so on has been an investment that has paid off handsomely. Trump and far too many conservatives can’t seem to grasp that. Well, the free world is increasingly resentful of being deemed a bunch of worthless moochers and the “America First” Trump claims will be his legacy will be instead America not only no longer leading the free world, but just another seat at the table. NOT at the head!
I’m writing this because I want to emphasize what went on in Germany and what’s going on now. A couple of months ago the seemingly ascendant AfD Party got slapped down by Germany’s voters who decided to stick with the established center-right rule they’ve had. It was also made clear the German people did NOT like Rubio and Vance interjecting themselves into their affairs and election. That should have been a wake-up call for Trump and others. This is GERMANY we’re talking about. Unlike here, they teach history and students heed what they are taught. They want no part of the kind of leadership that led to two freaking World Wars.
The AfD is awfully extreme, neo-fascist group and intelligence services there have determined they are downright dangerous:
Just last week the German Intelligence service designated the party a “far-right extremist organization,” which, because of Germany’s past experience with the most notorious far-right extremist party in history, carries a heavy legal burden in that country that allows the government to use surveillance powers to keep tabs on it.
It seems Rubio and Vance didn’t learn a damned thing from the AfD they said was worthy underperforming in the election. So they are speaking up again and ripping on Germany. I can’t embed the tweet Rubio made on his SecState account, which includes the official German response (from the German Foreign Office) but Rubio tweeted (Xitted?):
Germany just gave its spy agency new powers to surveil the opposition. That’s not democracy-it’s tyranny in disguise. What’s truly extremist is not the popular AfD-which took second in the recent election-but rather the establishment’s deadly open border policy.
Well, examining all the “horse apples” in that statement would take at least a whole different article. What matters is the German Foreign Office response in the tweet:
This is democracy. This decision is the result of a thorough & independent investigation to protect our Constitution & the rule of law. It is independent courts that will have the final say. We have learnt from our history that rightwing extremism needs to be stopped.
So a couple of months ago we had extremists openly supported by Vance and Rubio (and therefore Trump) come up short in Germany. More recently we’ve seen Canada and Australia also tell Trump and his minions to STFU and just go away. Europe is now paying more and doing more to support Ukraine than we are. It’s clear the free world has accepted that any alliance with the United States is only good for four years and then all bets are off. If we don’t get our sh*t together we won’t just fall from leader to having a seat at the table, we’ll be relegated to the diplomatic version of the “Kid’s Table!”
I think Trump should stick to wasting taxpayer dollars playing golf and PAINTING HIS FACE ORANGE, J.D. Vance should stick to humping the furniture and Rubio should just return to being the “Little Marco” Trump turned him into that just quietly went about staying out of the limelight. They should take the lesson Germany is trying to teach them – learn from history to avoid making the same mistakes over and over!
***Zoomers, we are always in need of donations. It’s been an especially rough month and my own health has not been great these past few weeks, which just adds to the frustration. Anything you can spare will be immensely appreciated. And thank you to all who have donated generously already. Ursula***

“… the German people did NOT like Rubio and Vance interjecting themselves into their affairs and election.”
And they REALLY don’t like it when Elon Musk does the same.
Bye bye, Tesla.
