The Coup
The American experiment was ruthlessly terminated in a coup, just 17 months shy of its 250th anniversary. It leaves behind a nation in mourning for a democratic republic that was largely beloved by its citizens and admired by most of the world’s people.
In its place is a plutocratic dicktatorship. The dick nominally in charge goes by many names including Phony47 which sums up how legitimate most of us think he is. The real power, however, resides in the cluster of dystopians behind his cardboard throne. They’re a combination of billionaires, sociopaths and criminals in a Venn diagram arrangement.
As Dr Allison Gill (@muellershewrote.bsky.social) noted, these misfits are not actually governing. That is not their goal. Government is what America had up until January 20, 2025. What Phony47 and the plutocrats are actively doing is dismantling the government.
They began by rounding up undocumented immigrants. That did not go so well but they are maliciously persistent. They followed that up by banning DEI and that unholy trend rapidly spread to private companies.

The latter didn’t fare well with customers. Those who chose to fawn over Phony47 and his crooked cabal lost custom to companies like Costco that chose to stick with their DEI policy. We know the bootlickers are losing market share because they’re spending money to whitewash their policy changes. They’re now claiming they’re “evolving” their position into the “Global Inclusion Team” (McDonald’s) and “rebranding” DEI to IDB “Inclusion, Diversity & Belonging.” (Starbucks). However, disillusioned customers are not responding to these attempts to gaslight them. They are not returning.
The freezing of federal funds signalled the subjugation of Congress and its nullification as a coequal branch of government. By asserting autocratic authority over federal spending, Congress’s lawmaking powers sank to the level of an advisory body. British-American writer Patrick White commented:

Exactly. None of this was surprising to those who’d been paying attention; devastating, but not surprising.
But I admit even I was unprepared when the Lone Musk, armed with a group of delinquent hackers launched an offensive on The US Treasury. The highly sensitive information they copied and transferred to an unofficial Musk computer with full permission from the newly confirmed Treasury Secretary and Phony47, constituted the single greatest security breach in the nation’s history. And it hasn’t stopped. The criminality and casual cruelty are relentless.
It’s like a rollercoaster ride with none of us strapped in. We’re being pummelled daily by a succession of crises, each greater than the one before. With no time to properly absorb each jarring blow, many people are at the mercy of their reactions: shock and fear, despair and anger. For many, it’s a kaleidoscopic fusion of emotions. The sense of helplessness, of powerlessness, is frightening.
They want to know what is being done. What are the Democrats in Congress doing? They can’t wrap their minds around the fact that the party in the minority has very limited power and even less since Phony47 severed Congress from the governing base. That their calls to Congress aren’t being answered isn’t because they’re being ignored; it’s a logistical problem. They don’t have the staff to handle 16,000 calls an hour.
Then they demand to know why these criminals haven’t been arrested. But they don’t want to hear that all federal law enforcement personnel are under Phony47’s control. They cling to the fallacy that the Judicial branch can save them. They can’t.

Taking Stock
So let’s look at your options for action – what you can do. First, take stock of your own situation. Your physical and mental health are important. Luna Luvgood has a list.

Be honest about the political situation. To be effective, you must be grounded in reality. Actions based on fantasy or wishful thinking have a very poor chance of success.

Be honest too about the people involved. Don’t fall into the trap of blaming the Dems. They’re human. They need support. No one expected things to get so bad so fast. They’re also running the gamut of emotions.

Action Options
Flooding The Zone
Flooding Trump and Musk’s Zone is a tactic devised by Robert Reich and endorsed by Laurence Tribe.

Sabotage
If you’re a federal worker or know a federal worker, consider sabotage as a strategy. There’s even a free Field Manual available on the internet.

Community Networking
Active community groups will be key to holding the nation together in the days ahead. People will have all kinds of needs including material (food, supplies), resources (advice, reliable news, emergency information) and emotional (shared laughter, a shoulder to cry on). This Blue Sky thread by Jen Wang explains how to get started and what you can achieve. It’s inspiring and provides excellent real-life examples of accessible ways to take meaningful action. The ultimate aim is a hands-across-America network that links together community nucleus groups in every county.
Special Elections
The US House of Representatives will need to fill three empty seats via special elections. All are Republican seats but, if Democrats can flip them, they will become the majority party in the House. It’s a tall order but the chaos created by the coup has flipped the script and made it possible.
Details of the first two special elections can be found at Flip It Blue, including contact information for both Dem challengers. Just scroll down to Florida (the states are in alphabetical order) to find the contests. The third election will be in New York but no date has been announced as yet.
Gay Valimont, the challenger for FL-01, is looking for phone banking volunteers. It’s a good opportunity to share your concerns with potential voters who can make a real difference.
If you know of other action opportunities, please subscribe (it’s free) and provide details in the comment section below. I will be noting any I come across so I can add to this list in future articles.
Be good to yourself and commit a random act of kindness along the way – it’s a win-win.

Excellent blog Michelle. You’ve touched on the rage, despair, fear and loathing we are feeling and follow up with action and hope. Thank you. I needed this.
Thank you Michelle Elle
A good one to keep to help us wade through all the goo.
You forgot guns. That’s the only thing they fear. I guarantee trump didn’t think of that.
That’s how Russia overtook the country. No guns. It was easy with propaganda and no weapons to defend yourself against the powers that be.
I wonder when trumps gonna figure that out and try to confiscate our weapons
Well done!!!!! Thank you.
I wonder how long before the Rs in congress figure out they are next?
Hopefully enough will wake up before it’s too late and impeach and convict him.
I really think the Ds like being out of power. The pay is the same and they can’t be blamed.
Plus, they can fundraise off the peoples’ outrage.
Why I stopped donating to any political groups / candidates years ago.
The “Subprime” Court thinks they will be spared when Phony47 assumes total control.
Hope you guys have a nest egg and escape plan.
And a private jet idling on the runway!
“Don’t fall into the trap of blaming the Dems.” Thank you, Michelle, for emphasizing that! The blame falls squarely on the GOP for enabling Trump.
I firmly believe we can exert economic power. Avoid spending money on products or services from companies that supported Trump. You can download an app, Goods United Us, that lists major companies’ political leanings. Don’t vacation in states that support Trump. I personally will not donate to any charities based in red states, but some may not agree with that.
Most importantly, support independent media! Corporate-owned networks and publications care more about profits than digging for the truth. There are still some good journalists in the major media outlets, but their influence is waning. We need to be informed in order to put up an effective resistance.
Absolutely the BEST article I have ever read about about this whole mess. You have corralled it ALL for us readers: the gut wrenching emotion, the panic, they fear, the outrage…all of it is distilled down for us to take in and process. But then you offer some reality-based, common sense ways to fight back and survive this! I love the check list for how people are doing. I’m a retired mental health professional, and I know all the tricks to calm myself–but some days, they don’t work for me either! I will forward your article to about a million friends and I will post it on social media even though I have sworn off of it. Have you posted this article on Blue Sky? Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, Michelle! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
We, the people, should immediately develop government cleaning squads to terminate all these traitors with extreme prejudice. Snipers taking long shots could eradicate these problems one at a time.
