J.D. Vance and Ron DeSantis may have been trained at Yale but they are not two guys who can think on their feet or extemporize. Every time I look at Vance I see DeSantis and recall his disastrous campaign. Donald Trump may have thought he was getting a MAGA pitbull on the ticket with him, no, he’s getting DeSanctimonious on steroids and that is a lethal prescription for a political ticket. At least so far it seems to be so.

And then mistaking Abbey Gate for Abbey Road is the comic touch that was needed. But what carries the day is that Vance just isn’t good at this. He’s a MAGA shill on right-wing media. At that he excels. But when it comes to the real world and handling conflicts involving ordinary people and their interaction with the campaign, he is clueless. He doesn’t have the requisite empathy or ability to connect as a real person. As Tim Walz put it, he’s weird.
He’s weird the same way DeSantis was weird and you saw how that campaign burned through cash and circled the drain in record time. I said at the time that going forward the DeSantis campaign would be the textbook of how not to run a presidential campaign. Now we see J.D. Vance making the same rookie mistakes — apparently because Trump thought that Vance could keep up his MAGA attack dog persona in the real world outside of right-wing media. No he can’t.
And Trump can’t do it either. Trump is laughed at and scorned in front of any group of *normal* Americans, granting for the sake of argument that the Libertarian Convention attendees were politically engaged people and not a cross section of America and the Black journalists convention in Chicago was filled with a niche group. Point being, neither of those groups was a cross section of America but they profoundly were not MAGA acolytes and MAGA acolytes are the only people that Trump or Vance can shine with. That’s it. Outside the confines of Fox News, RSBN, all that, they are both ridiculed for the jokes that they are.
There, you see it before you. Call in J.D. Vance to do cleanup on Aisle 45, he throws gasoline on the fire, now it’s a five-engine blaze as the grocery store goes up in flames. Sigh. I know Trump wants to cut this bozo loose but I don’t know if he can withstand the ensuing legal and media firestorms. I tend to think not. Ballots are printed. This show goes on no matter what Vance and Trump are doing to take it off the road.
Trump not run away from our Veterans? Vance may not have known the full story of the Battle of Belleau Wood when he enlisted but before boot camp was over he sure as hell did. And if he attended any Marine Corps Birthday Balls he heard General LeJeune’s message citing a few of the Corps’ most iconic battle including Belleau Wood. Yet look what happened, or rather did NOT happen when the world’s leaders met in France to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of WWI on November 11, 2018. The day before on the calendar is Nov. 10 which happens to be the Marine Corps Birthday. And Vance sure as hell wants everyone to know he was by god a Marine!
Belleau Wood and the aftermath turned the tide of WWI and put the German’s on the defensive, and run. Before the end of the year the Armistice was signed and the guns fell silent. The dead of that battle (mostly Marines but I have to give props to the Army because there are plenty of Soldiers buried in those graves) are buried at the adjacent (to the battle area) Aisne-Marine Cemetery. It’s roughly sixty miles from Paris so most of the leaders of the the countries that were the principle combatants in WWI showed up there on Nov. 10 for a ceremony to honor the battle and the dead who turned the tide of the war.
As they looked around and realized Trump was absent I suspect they felt a mix of WTF is wrong with this guy and WTF has happened to America that he somehow became President’ and relief that he would sh*t all over such a solemn event. So in a way J.D. is technically right – Trump didn’t run away. He just refused to be bothered with showing up! There was drizzle and light rain and no cover over the platform where the bigwigs would be.
Trumpy didn’t want his poofy, duckass combover hairdo go go frizzy (or worse, get really wet and melt down the sides of his bald head) so he blew it off! And THEN blame my (It’s not YOUR Marine Corps anymore J.D.) Marine Corps, as in the crew of Marine One claiming they told him it was unsafe to fly in those conditions. These in case you don’t know are seasoned Naval Aviators who have years of experience to be considered for a spot in the Marine Presidential helicopter squadron. They have proven capable of landing on the pitching decks of ships a lot smaller than the huge aircraft carriers you are used to seeing. At night in seas with fifteen, twenty foot waves and driving rain and winds. To claim they couldn’t fly through a light mist was a masssive insult to their capability.
Goddamn you J.D. Vance. In writing yesterday I thought about former Commandant Al Grey who happened to play a key role in that evacuation of Saigon. He’s long since dead and buried but if HE were still alive and Commandant he’d stomp into your Senate office and knock you on your smug ass. Then have his aides help him in going through the whole place collecting every bit of “Hey! Look! I was in the Marines!” memorabilia, dumping it into a big plastic bin and pissing on it. And then pouring in a can of gasoline and setting it all on fire!
The only way for Fat Elvis to get rid of this John Boy Walton wannabe is to have Vance himself withdraw from the race……..that is the only way Fat Elvis can look like it wasn’t a mistake on his part and save face.
And yet it can only be seen as a mistake on his part. The vetting might have been done by someone else but in the end, the choice was his.
The xitter message from Dump Trump seems to think this is the only episode in which this ticket has disrespected veterans (it is von shitzi’s m.o. f.f.s.). I can’t imagine Qusay and Uday picking someone not exactly like their father which was why this was one of their biggest fuck-ups to date.

And that is the nub of their problem. To succeed in the MAGA world requires a shrillness of hyperbole that doesn’t work in the real world. Ironically, as it has evolved, MAGA has removed itself from relevance to the far greater majority. In this, it mirrors it’s host, that which it has parasitized, the republican party. They have evolved their own self-referential eco-systems of irrelevance to the majority of people in the real world.
Denis. I totally agree. Real warriors have nothing but scorn for traitors draped in fake esteem by occupying positions they dishonor. I was walking with another veteran today who served in combat in Vietnam. We were discussing how far our culture has slid off the rails concerning how in the hell does a pissant like Trump, a rich boy who dodged serving, stole the 2016 election with putin’s help, stood with putin over our intelligence agencies in Helsinki, and all the times he misused and denigrated the military, got 10 MILLION MORE PHUCKING VOTES in 2020. He brought up an interesting theory. In WW2, the entire country sacrificed to stop Hitler and the Japanese. He feels we’ve become soft and self involved putting ourselves above serving others. He said once we ended the draft, we started down the road to hell and are reaping our karma. I never saw combat but a number in my family did in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. That being said, spending two months in boot camp, living with 79 other guys, learning to function and operate as a unit on orders 24/7, and being phucked with 24/7…it isn’t called training for nothing. Civilians have no such experience. It’s as alien to them as the surface of the moon. He said the day we ended the draft we created a generation of self involved spoiled citizens…Trump was inevitable. I couldn’t muster an argument against that observation. The citizens only value soliders when their ass is on the line, and the warriors are the only thing standing between them and the tyranny of evil men.

In one account he mentioned a “disagreement.” I thought whilem reading that, “Yeah. A disagreement about what Federal law allows and what it doesn’t. That’s the knd of disagreement which ahould be settled in court, not with fists.
