It’s becoming increasingly apparent that there is marital discord in the Trump household. Connect the dots. On August 3, Donald Trump made his cringeworthy comment at a rally in Georgia, about when Michaelah Montgomery supposedly kissed him (in gratitude for him saving her Black college, an event which never happened) and he declared, “I’m never going home to the First Lady.” That was straight out of Bizarro World, even for Trump. Then just yesterday, during the *interview* with Elon Musk on Twitter/X, Trump said that Kamala Harris’s portrait on the cover of TIME looked like “the most beautiful actress that ever lived. Actually, she looks very much like our great First Lady, Melania.” Mary Trump said that even as a trained clinical psychologist she was having trouble parsing that remark, but Stephen Colbert put it all together. Start at 5:19 to hear Trump sounding like Sylvester J. Puddytat.

Yes, he hates Kamala but suddenly Kamala resembles not only the most beautiful actress that ever lived but his wife. Trump is throwing shade. Melania is coming up in very bizarre contexts, even for him, and I think it’s clear that he’s trolling his own wife. He’s probably resentful as hell that she won’t campaign with him, didn’t come to the June 27 debate with him, and arrived in the last few hours of the Republican convention.

Keep an eye out for this. I think there’s a pattern forming and Trump is going to do this more. Remember, we have no idea what goes on behind closed doors. But the look on Melania’s face at her mother’s funeral, when she didn’t want him to come into the same limo with her, speaks volumes. It’s entirely possible she hates him as much as we do, even though they’re two peas in a pod. Perhaps because they’re too peas in a pod.

And Melania can figure out the obvious as well as anybody else. Trump is quite likely to lose. He was likely to lose against Joe Biden but since the ascension of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz to the ticket, it’s looking and feeling like 2008 all over again. Melania understands the stakes. She knows full well how much money is going into legal fees and she knows that when Trump loses there’s a chance he could go to prison.

Add to that scenario the fact that his latest business endeavor, Truth Social, is headed the way of all the other business endeavors, and the chance of Trump becoming a legitimate billionaire is now crashing. Trump is mortgaged, leveraged, and in debt. The entire house of cards could easily fall.

Melania will hang in there legally to get what she can get for herself and Barron. But what that means is that she’s got a front row seat watching the Trump train leave the tracks.

  1. She has never wanted to be in the WH. She has not been with him at all except that little bit of time at the convention. She probably has renegotiated her prenup.

    • She definitely never wanted to be in the White House. Other people with children have been elected to the presidency and have taken up residence in January. Those children were in school. Plans were made for the kids to transfer to the new school mid-year. Melania was using moving to the White House as a bargaining chip to get what she wanted.

I think that’s why Trump is throwing shade. He’s had it with her bullshit but doesn’t want a divorce right now due to the election.

  2. I understood what you meant after a beat, and maybe I’m just dim, but the quick series of statements (paraphrasing): *Trump is likely to lose* and *it’s feeling like 2008 again* hit my eye funny. For whatever it’s worth.
That said, I think you’re right – they’re peas in a pod – both scheming opportunists who deserve whatever poetic misery that befalls them.

    • She’s a narcissist like he is. She wants to be beautiful and gaslight everybody that she was a supermodel. She was never a supermodel. I can’t remember where I read it but Melania’s only goal is preserving her beauty. Hey, good for her. She could be doing other things in the world, helping people, doing legitimate charity work (meaning, not stealing from kids with cancer) but she’s too busy staying beautiful. Fine.

    • You know their kid has got to be messed up? All he’s learning is that money and beauty are the only important things in life. And a lot of people think that way. But I wouldn’t call it “evolved” thinking.
