I know that Gone With The Wind is not only a very old movie, at this point, but a movie that has unfortunately been labeled as racist as hell. Not that that’s an undeserved label. It was made in 1939, and that was a racist era. But the movie came to mind tonight, one line of it at least, when Rhett says to Scarlett, “You’re throwing away happiness with both hands and going after something that will never make you happy,” meaning her obsession with Ashley. I see the Democratic party doing the exact same thing. They can’t be content to just stay the course, hold the line, and beat Donald Trump. Trump is beatable. But not if we don’t stick together and roll over him with everything we’ve got.

You read the same stories that I do. CNN has said that Trump can win by 330 electoral points, dear God. And I guess the Democrats are eating this up with a spoon. At least our top leaders are, from what I read. Adam Schiff’s voicemail boxes are jammed and that has been the case since early afternoon. I couldn’t leave a message, so I sent him an email. And in the email I included the commentary by Stuart Stevens, which I published in a piece here today. Stevens is a Lincoln Project co-founder and a Republican strategist from some time back. He says the race isn’t that hard to win. I believe him. But if we fragment and dispel our force, our forward momentum, then we can’t win anything.

Here are a few scenes from the freak show in Milwaukee. It is laughable. But rather than fight this idiocy head on, we’re fighting with each other.

That is the best description of MAGA that I’ve ever read, right there. And here’s another one.

The RBG tweet is cut off, but the top says “Fight Back Dammit.” Yes. Fight back. Don’t roll over and give the election to Trump. And here’s more.

I thought Matt Gaetz was strange before but this beats freaking ALL. We could go all night with scenes from Bizarro World in Milwaukee, but let’s assess the madness that the Democratic party is involved in. Because we are now at a make or break point. I thought we had resolved that Joe Biden was staying in. Then Adam Schiff had to get into the act. Now, whatever wounds were healing, are open again — and salt rubbed in. Swell. Nick Cattoggio writes a column “Boiling Frogs” for The Dispatch. He’s a Never Trump Republican and as such his views about the Democrats are pretty brutal. But let’s see what he has to say because it’s time for a dose of reality. We have to decide, as a party, which direction we’re going. This pushmi pullyou game cannot continue.

A new poll from the Associated Press released Wednesday finds nearly two-thirds of Democrats want a different candidate. Another recent poll conducted by NBC News found 62 percent of the party wishing it would nominate someone else. […]

Here’s one more item to add to the list of destabilizing political developments that are without precedent: a revolt by party delegates against a sitting president.

I doubt it’ll happen. But we’re nearing a point of such political despair that a palace coup might plausibly be the least bad outcome when Democrats get together next month.

It would be a terrible outcome, splitting the party between pro- and anti-Biden camps and igniting ferocious recriminations between the two. Time heals all wounds, but Democrats don’t have time. There’s an election in less than four months. Dragging Joe Biden kicking and screaming off the ticket is pointless if the hard feelings that linger afterward will ensure that his replacement is unelectable.

This is pretty much where it’s at. If this discussion was had sometime last year, say after Trump declared he was running, if Biden had passed the torch then, we would be having a different conversation. At this point, it’s flat out madness to be contemplating a Biden replacement. Yet madness rules the day. We’ve got a convicted felon running on the GOP ticket and his primary opponents all caving in as they convert to MAGA. Meanwhile, the Democrats are contemplating political seppuku. If I wasn’t seeing this with my own eyes, I would not believe any of it.

But a capable nominee leading a bitterly divided party seems like a marginally better bet to me now than an incapable nominee leading a demoralized one. Democratic delegates voting their conscience—which Biden has permitted them to do—by denying him the nomination would amount to them daring the party’s Trump-hating base to punish America and themselves by not turning out for the new nominee in November.

It’d be an insane gamble. But at least there’s an upside to it, which there no longer is with Joe Biden.

There’s also the possibility, though, that this cake is already baked and whoever ends up leading the Democratic ticket will end up losing to Trump. Kamala Harris, Gretchen Whitmer, Josh Shapiro: It might simply be too late to matter now.

That’s not to say that Biden shouldn’t be replaced, as losing narrowly to Trump rather than losing badly could be the difference between a Republican House majority and a Democratic one. But an election between Trump and a last-second liberal to be named later is likely to become a referendum on the latter, not the former. And Americans, to their great disgrace, seem comfortable enough with the devil they know that I have trouble believing they’d gamble at this hour on one they don’t.

What the man is saying here is that we’re at a place where the Democrats could make Trump the “normalcy” candidate, if that is even humanly possible to conceive. That is what is being said here. Now this is what I think: I think that whatever is going to take place needs to be decided NOW. And once it is decided upon — and I hope the decision is to stay with Biden and not go crazy — then the rule has to be that NOBODY opens his or her mouth against Biden. No celebrity, no congress member in either chamber, no. body. Period. That is the only way we can go.

If you read the newspapers, supposedly donors are drying up on Biden, all kinds of madness. I absolutely believe that all this would go away if the party would simply unite behind our incumbent president. That is my heartfelt feeling. And logically? Logically, the electorate knows and expects that this is a race between two old men, both of whom have served four years as president. One of them will be given the opportunity to serve another four years. Except, if that one is Trump, he will probably stay in office and become an autocratic dictator. I do not see a scenario where anybody who voted for Biden in 2020 will shift their vote to Trump because they think that Biden has fallen off a step or two.

And if Trump does win? Ukraine will fall to Russia and that will be the beginning of world destabilization. We are at a crossroads which is unparalleled in our history. We need to calm down and unify behind our leader, our incumbent president. Or we will lose our way of life.

There is no f*****g way that more than half of democrats want Biden gone. We know that when we elect him we get Kamala as back-up.

The same polling that predicted a red wave in the last house election?

This ‘polling’ is bullshit. and everyone knows it.

The Billionaire Owned Media want’s their ‘horse-race’ and they’ll wreck democracy and the world to do it.

And the corporate dems are behind them as well.

Replace the capable incumbent with WHO? Look at who he’s running against, the worst candidate EVER as a reprise of his role as the worst President EVER?

Never doubt our side’s ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

    • You would think that that the higher ups in the Democratic party would know this better than anybody, would you not? Supposedly the donor money is drying up, as I said. Fine. How much donor money do we need? Can small donors do it? All that we seriously need are some campaign ads showing Trump to be the scum that he is. How much does that cost?

I seriously am wondering if this is all made up bullshit just for the purpose that you stated, to create the racehorse narrative. But the Schiff comment and the ongoing hassle over Joe being the nominee is just out of control. I am freaking out over this. We truly are throwing away success with both hands.

  2. Bob. If Trump wins, don’t bother running. Once he undoes Biden’s climate initiatives, climate change will flame up like charcoal lighter poured on a fire. The planet will decide for us that we’re a species no longer welcome. That might push me into reckoning with the fascists who will destroy my children’s future on this planet. Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose. The struggle would be go after the soulless nazis or go after the traitors and cowards that gave Trump the election. Tough one.

  3. I just sent the following to several candidates I
have contributed to. Also DNC, Hakeem, Schumer
etc. Apparently you can only email Pelosi if you
    live in California.

I am one of millions of small dollar
    donors to Democratic candidates. I
am extremely distressed by the ongoing
mess surrounding all the talk about
replacing President Biden as our party’s
candidate. All of this devolves from the
constant media blather about his ability
to win the race. There is no evidence to
    support that contention. Dropping Biden
at this point for an as yet unspecified
replacement would result in even more
chaos and confusion than is already being
caused by so called party leadership who
seem intent on yet again snatching defeat
from the jaws of victory. This is insanity
compounded by stupidity and would almost
certainly lead to a Trump win. If that
were to occur, given everything Trump and
other Republicans have said they will do
if that happens, all down ballot races
would have no importance whatsoever. If
you do not understand that then you have
no business seeking or holding elected
office. This needs to resolved immediately.
Until it is I will not be throwing away
what comparatively little money I have to
give. I hope you will choose to get behind
Biden. If not then just get out of the way.
I look forward to your response. If I do
not receive one that will tell me what I
    need to know.

  5. Scott Samuel Jackson July 19, 2024 At 10:52 am: You can’t have a democracy if cowards have the power and the pulpit. It wasn’t established, or defended by cowards, sitting on their comfortable asses, eating at 5 star restaurants, sleeping on Egyptian cotton, riding in limos and bulletproof SUVs, fretting about how they keep their 6 to 7 figure incomes, with assets piled high to heaven. FACT!!!! The people calling for Joe to step down live a lifestyle more akin to trump than to the 95% of the rest of us. FACT! That’s really the problem.
