Yes, we all agree that we have a gaffe prone Joe Biden. Joe has always been prone to gaffes and as time goes by that propensity has increased. So do we live with it, because we’re not hiring him to be a professional speaker, we’re hiring him to be our president and lead our country, or do we become the collective Red Queen and shout, “Off with his head!” Because, in a nutshell, that is what Biden’s naysayers, some of whom claim to be personal friends, have asked for.

And it’s not surprising that show business people are premiere amongst those calling for Biden to step down. These are image people, in large part. They got where they got because they could, the actors at least, create believable characters and entertain. And part of politics in this day and age, especially since the advent of Donald Trump, has been about entertainment. If you didn’t catch Joe Biden’s Michigan rally yesterday, he addresses that very thing.

Politics should be boring, if it’s being done right. Just like journalism should be boring, if it’s being done right. In journalism, the people who win Pulitzer Prizes are the ones who doggedly follow a trail of breadcrumbs until they get the entire picture put together and at the end, “Eureka!” they’ve made an amazing scoop of a story. One such incident is when journalist David Fahrenthold exposed Donald Trump’s lies about the “millions” he gave to charities and he never gave anybody anything. Fahrenthold put all the lies together, did all the research and gave us the truth wrapped up in a tidy package and with a bow on it.

Likewise, statesmanship is very similar. It’s getting laws made. It’s following an agenda. When actual accomplishments have been made, then it’s time to get on the TV and take a bow. Joe Biden has had his share of accomplishments. He’s got the track record. He’s been effective. The man can do the job, has done the job, and IS doing the freaking job, even as he campaigns and his detractors shriek, “Oh, noes! He’s too old! He’s got to go!”

He may in fact be too old to give the level of polished speech he might have been able to give back in the day but he’s not too old to do the job that we hired him to do and that he is in fact doing. Whereas his opponent, Donald Trump, has zero ability to do the job of being president and we saw that during four torturous years. And the irony here? The sublime irony? The only other person in America who is more gaffe prone than Joe Biden is Trump!

Which brings us to the story at hand. Even Kristen Welker, who is quite young and has zero issues of age and infirmity, screwed up and made the exact same gaffe that she has chastised Joe Biden for making.

So there you have it. Yes, a slip of the tongue is an embarrassment. And particularly so if you’re a broadcaster or a politician. But guess what? They happen. And so if Kristen Welker wants to challenge Joe Biden’s mental acuity, well hey, honey, what about your own? And you’re not 81 years old.

We need to rally around our standard bearer and make sure the job of president can go to the man who can do it. Now here’s another sublime irony: I have heard it repeated for a few weeks now (since the June 27 debate) that Team Trump is hoping and praying that Joe Biden STAYS in the race because that’s going to get them their “landslide.” Uh uh. Not going to happen. Whatever flame out on Biden’s part has already happened. He’s come back from it. He’s moving on.

Team Trump can keep following his progress and dogging his every gaffe, but Team Trump would do well to coach their own candidate. Because the year is not 2016. We saw what Trump could do. We saw where voting for a reality TV clown got us. I don’t see America making that same mistake again.

As Joe Biden said, “Listen to him,” meaning Trump. Yes. You want to hear a doddering old man making a gaffe every time he opens his mouth, listen to Trump. In Trump’s case things are a lot worse. Trump just gets up in front of a crowd and wings it with strangeness talking about sharks and batteries, whereas Biden transposes a word here and there — and admittedly, embarrassingly so. He’s not denying the embarrassment aspect of it, he’s acknowledging it and moving on.

That’s what we need to do. We’re not hiring the man to be a toastmaster at parties, we’re hiring him to keep doing the job he’s ably done. And more importantly, to keep that maniac Trump out of our government.

  1. Screw her! She’s a terrible, lying, two faced commentator that I either mute or turn off when she is on. I am literally sick of watching TV anymore, especially CNN and now I’m rather disappointed in MSNBC lately also. Yes Joe Biden had a bad Debate, and Yes Joe Biden had a gaffe, but Trump fucks up every word, every sentence that comes out of his disgusting mouth and we hear crickets! Democrats, of which I am one, need to get their shit together and back and support Joe Biden because we can’t have 4 years of that moronic Trump back in the White House, it will be a living HELL!!!

  2. Another fine posting, Ursula …

Being one of the current, fresh-faced, news presenters, with possibly years ahead in the same position, she has, ALREADY shown herself to be a mere mortal human …

Joe has been traveling thousands of miles at all hours of a given day, to meet with people from other countries and make policies affecting ALL of US … Trump’s continued absence of intelligence, has made him the least articulate, public nuisance ever …

It’s mind boggling, that anyone wants this biggest loser/liar/convicted criminal and faker president back in office …

The GOP HAS to see they are sinking rapidly as long as their handlers promote Trump … He has become a liability on fire, mindless word salads at the mic, all the signs of a nerves-induced breakdown coming soon, Trump HAS to know, the world’s biggest loser WILL be totally destroyed publicly if he does NOT win …

I’m reminded of Nixon’s TV message to the citizens, caught in his own web, sweating huge amounts, dripping from his face, twisted into a look of pure panic …

  3. Yes, yes, Ursula. I just posted the same in my comment in Denis’s Unicorn story, after I did a gaffe. Thanks as always for your diary.
Politics is boring. My undergrad was Sociology and that is so boring they hardly teach it anymore. But I got an A is Deviance in Society, I wonder why?
I think there is a ray of hope in things now, but I will still be cautious about that.
