The GOP is a performative theater troupe, not a political party. They have fully embraced MAGA and the total irresponsibility of its leader, Donald Trump. They evidently believe that if they act crazy, talk crazy, insult people that this is going to get them votes. Maybe with MAGA it will. They have the MAGA votes, that’s not their issue. Their issue is surviving Donald Trump going down in flames again. But they don’t believe that will happen. They apparently believe that if they just lie nonstop that the entire electorate will become enraged and vote Republican.

One of the worst hit jobs in the Trump administration was against Dr. Anthony Fauci. A world class epidemiologist, respected by all, he has been demonized and has become the center of many conspiracy theories. What happened in Congress this morning was unforgivable. Listen to Marge for as long as you can stand it. I lasted two minutes. Then listen to Jamie Raskin and read a synopsis of the hearing. This is where Donald Trump has led us, right here.

Now, thank God, the voice of reason, Jamie Raskin.

And more from Jared Moskowitz.

Meidas Touch:

The purpose of the hearing was so Republicans could air a series of conspiracy theories they have developed over the years, which several members are using as the basis for calls to have Fauci criminally prosecuted and put in prison. These included the following false claims:

1. Fauci funded gain of function research at the Wuhan lab, that research resulted in the creation of Covid-19, therefore Fauci caused the pandemic.

2. Fauci knew all along that the lab leak theory was true and Covid did not come from nature and covered that up. He also ignored alternative theories and suppressed them.

3. The 6′ rule was arbitrary, created by Fauci, and had no basis in science.

4. Fauci likely destroyed information including emails that could have proven his misconduct and cover up.

In his opening statement, Fauci addressed some of the main conspiracy theories:

1. When covid first broke out, he met with over a dozen of the leading virologists from all over the world on a lengthy conference call where they exchanged their research and debated both the lab leak theory and natural origin theory. Fauci said that the few scientists who began the call advancing the lab leak theory became convinced they were wrong during that discussion. Fauci said he took no position during the meeting, did not try and influence the discussion, and encouraged others to continue to explore alternate theories.

2. Fauci said he took no efforts whatsoever to cover up the lab leak theory. He then read an email where he encouraged a leading scientist to continue to explore the lab leak theory, which would contradict the conspiracy that he suppressed any alternate theories.

3. A senior advisor to NIAID Dr. David Morens admitted to the Committee in previous testimony that he engaged in misconduct by deleting emails and using his private email for government business to avoid FOIA requests, and Republicans were desperate to tie him to Fauci as a result. Fauci said he was not an advisor to him, he rarely met with him, his office wasn’t in the same building, and he attended no meetings where Morens was present. He also said he exchanged no emails at all with Morens on his private email, except for many years ago when he gave his input on a paper he was publishing long before covid.

4. Fauci said that he never used a personal email address for any government business and never deleted any emails.

5. He said that the CDC came up with the 6′ foot rule based on older studies not him or NIAID, and he had nothing to do with determining their recommendation.

The first exchange between Republican Committee Chair Dr. Brad Wenstrup about the covid vaccine was somewhat interesting, where Wenstrup conceded that “the vaccine saved millions of lives.” This is the opposite of the position of most Republicans including the others on the Committee.

It’s nothing short of a tragedy that this man has been demonized and harassed like he has been. Donald Trump killed hundreds of thousands of people through the ineptitude of his administration and that came straight from the mouth of his own expert, Dr. Deborah Birx, as read by Congressman Raskin.

Fauci also made a sobering point that the politicization and right-wing conspiracy theories surrounding the pandemic, which have led to “death threats, intimidation and harassment of health care workers across the country, will result in many of the best and brightest scientist and doctors shying away from a career in public health, which will only further endanger the public during future outbreaks.” This is an excellent point. No rational scientist is going to want to ply his or her wares in a scenario where they are likely to be characterized as MAGA public enemy number one, as they have seen happen with Dr. Fauci.

The die is cast. We see it everywhere. The GOP playbook is to support conspiracy theory and claim the victimization of their adjudicated rapist, convicted felon candidate. They believe this is the way to success. I think that America is going to show them that they are wrong in November.

  2. Boom.

“They apparently believe that if they just lie nonstop that the entire electorate will become enraged and vote Republican.”

    That’s it, in a nutshell.

    Their entire ‘policy’.

    • That policy can be quite effective on us fallible humans unfortunately, and don’t forget the power of right wing media. Look at History.
P.S. Their SOP also includes bullying and intimidation.

  4. Yeah, it’s sad Dr. Fauci served us so well and is being demonized by idiots. Here’s the thing tho’-history is going to look at this era and Dr. Fauci will likely take his place alongside Jonas Salk and other medical/disease greats. trump is going to go down in history with the nick name Von Shitsinpants with MANY felonies on his rap sheet, Marjie as Kooky Pants (and maybe terrorist Kooky Pants), Boebert as Bobo the Clown, Ron Johnson as Rojo the clown….These magats will be compared to the fly larvae variety and will come up somewhat lacking.
