You may be aware that one of the questions that are asked when a person is taken in for psychiatric evaluation is, “Who is president of the United States?” That used to be a pretty cut and dried thing, and not a matter of opinion like it is in this Tower of Babel world in which we live. Opinions have always existed in political discourse, that’s the very nature of the thing. But before the Era of Trump opinions were always based on the same set of facts.
During Watergate, for example, a great many people had a great many opinions on why it happened, who authorized the break-in, how far up the chain it went, etc. But at least we were all in agreement about the basics: somebody broke into Democratic National Headquarters. Richard Nixon was the president at the time. Facts were reported by media outlets of the day and this was in a pre-Fox News and right-wing media era, so there weren’t competing narratives about what and who the basic events and people involved were.
We no longer have that kind of clarity. We now live in a world where fully 17% of the population identifies as holding QAnon beliefs. And, we are told, that is 3% up from when the last survey was done three years ago, which perhaps signifies that the country is getting stupider. And we are also told that some 35% of the country is MAGA. Some of those two groups overlap, and 25% of Republicans identify as QAnon believers, i.e., that a globalist group of Satanic pedophiles controls the world and only Donald Trump stands between us and doom. Yesterday wasn’t the first time alluded to violence if and when he lost and yesterday will not be the last. The reason that Trump is where he is is due to a lot of enablers who stand to profit from a second Trump term. They’re simply hoping that he can hold it together and that somehow, by some miracle, it is possible to harp on Joe Biden’s age, his new “mysterious” sneakers, and whatever else they can dig out of the dumpster, dust off and repurpose in order to somehow sway votes to the orange-tinted madman who comes right out and says if you ever voted for any other Republican, screw you, your money and your vote.
Whether Darwin said this or this is just a meme, I don’t know, but I agree with the thought. And it’s not an original or exclusive thought. George Orwell explained to us the importance of rewriting history. “Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present, controls the past.” And if the present is consumed with two competing narratives about what is real or not, then I don’t know if there’s going to be much of a future.
People are literally going into a voting booth, or filling out a ballot at home, believing that Trump is still in office, operating from the sidelines, or that Obama is still in office, giving directions to Biden through a headset. I don’t know how we got so insane. I only know that we have. Here’s another rocket scientist, if you can handle it.

I am hoping and praying that there are more of us than of these morons. And I don’t mean Republicans. And I don’t even mean MAGAs. I mean idiots, of all stripes, colors, and persuasions. I am hoping that there are enough sane American adults over the age of 18, men and women of reasonable intelligence and discernment, who will register to vote and vote for democracy to continue. Or, we are in the last days, friend. Absolutely the last days.
