Something is keeping Rep. Matt Gaetz up at night—and no, it’s not an (alleged) underaged girl. Nope, instead he’s worried about something that could really be good news to Democrats and therefore bad news to the Republicans. So he shared his fears on his podcast.

Gaetz (R-Fla.) went on about how some of his fellow House Republicans could “take a bribe” thus tossing the hair-thin GOP majority to the Democrats if an extremist right-wing faction brings forward a motion to oust House Speaker Mike Johnson. And, he elaborated, if that happened, this would allow Democrats to take the House and install current Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries as House Speaker, according to The New Civil Rights Movement. And dear Heavens, if that happened Democrats would immediately declare Donald Trump ineligible to be President (he says that like it’s a bad thing), fill the U.S. Supreme Court with more of the progressive kind, and pass a slew of laws like the American Rescue Plan—a measure that helped millions of impoverished Americans, especially people of color and the disabled as the pandemic raged.

“i do believe in a one-seat majority there could be one or two or three of my colleagues who would take a bribe in one form or another in order to deprive the republicans of a majority at all,” gaetz opined on his podcast friday.

Not only that, he said, but “the risk that one or two of my corrupt Republican colleagues might take a bribe, take a walk, feign an ailment, and flip this thing to the Democrats is a risk that is too high for me at this time.”

Gaetz’s far-right colleague, Florida Republican member of Congress, Anna Paulina Luna, told listeners, “I heard that when, if and when the motion to vacate is introduced, that there will be immediate resignations of a couple of more moderate members of Congress. And in the event that that happens, that ultimately means it does go to a Democrat speaker.”

U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) last month filed a “motion to vacate,” which she can use at any time to force a vote to oust the GOP Speaker, Mike Johnson. U.S. Rep. Tim Massie (R-KY) and, earlier Friday, his fellow nutball U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) have signed on as co-sponsors. Greene is not bright enough to know she’s handing the House to the Democrats. I think we can bet real money on that one.

“that’ll be their leadoff hitter, and then the chaser to that shot will be a massive spending package that looks a lot more like the american rescue plan,” gaetz told listeners. “they will blow past every concept of every cap ever imagined. you’ll be looking at universal basic income, you could be looking at packing the supreme court.”

Welp, I don’t know folks. From my end, that looks like a good deal. But Republicans are allergic to helping poor people, preferring to stick to their wealthy benefactors. Let’s raise a glass to Greene handing the speakership to Jeffries and a Trump-free election cycle.

Hey, it could happen. I really have no idea what’s going to go down but if there’s even the slightest chance that Democrats retake the House, I’m all for it.

Here’s what Gaetz had to say below.

  1. Carry on republicans, we’d love to help but we have previous good advice we’re following.

    • Plus, none of the justices are retiring and Clarence Thomas is ornery enough to stay on through a Democratic presidency.

      • There isn’t any law saying the Supreme Court has to have only 9 justices. The Constitution merely establishes the Supreme Court (and the lesser courts) but says NOTHING about its composition. FDR had attempted to add more justices in 1937 (Congress had, following the Civil War, increased the Court to 9 members so Roosevelt believed Congress could increase the number). And, given some of SCOTUS’s recent abhorrent decisions, there has been increasing pressure for Biden to add more members so the right-wing bias would be reduced. (The only real downside to the plan is the next right-wing administration would be able to do the same thing and so on and so forth until SCOTUS could have as many members as Congress.)
