While I never thought I would ever rue the day that Mittens Mitt Romney left the political stage, I am in fact upset that that day has come, because his replacement is likely to be so very much worse, given the fact that Utah is a deep red state. The best we can hope for now is some rational Republican, maybe former Utah governor Jon Huntsman, somebody cut from that bolt of cloth. Or, maybe Evan McMullin can take home the bacon. That would certainly be the best of all possible worlds.

Meanwhile Donald Trump is jizzing over Romney’s retirement in an all-caps riot session on Truth Social, naturally. He’s been all-capsing for a couple of hours now. He’s busy teeing up the MAGA replacement.

Gospel truth, what you just read above. Gospel truth. For all that I disagree with Romney, he is at least a recognizable Republican type, not a huckster rich boy rebel without a clue. He did a credible job as Governor of Massachusetts and I will forever give him credit for voting to have Trump removed from office.

On his way out the door, Romney has some choice words for Trump.

I have diligently monitored Truth Social, waiting for the explosive parry to Romney’s thrust and will share it when it happens. These are fighting words, there’s no question about that. Trump is either busy cheating on the golf course, or having a hamberder, or he’s foaming at the mouth so much it’s dripping on his phone and his thumbs are slipping as he attempts to curse Romney out worse than Romney has cursed him.

Again, I’m sorry to see Romney leave, for the reasons stated. And he also took a shot at Biden on the way out. Not sure we needed that, but attacking a Democratic president is de rigueuer if you’re a Republican. I was just getting through praising you, Mittens, and then you did this. Back to Mittens you go. Roll Call:

Romney, 76, noted that he would be in his mid-80s at the end of another term. Unlike other octogenarians in Congress who have opted to remain, Romney said it was time for a new generation of leaders to step up.

“They’re the ones that need to make the decisions that will shape the world they will be living in,” he said.

He takes both Biden and Trump to task for failing to adequately address climate change. “Donald Trump calls global warming a hoax and President Biden offers feel-good solutions that will make no difference to the global climate,” he said in the statement.

Russia and China are rising threats that Trump and Biden have not adequately grappled with, he said. “Political motivations too often impede the solutions that these challenges demand. The next generation of leaders must take America to the next stage of global leadership,” he said.

I’m all for passing the baton on. Nancy Pelosi did that brilliantly in 2022. But this is an ageist slap at Biden. Romney is framing his retirement in noble terms and the fact of the matter is, he’s being selfish here. He knows every bit as much as we do, in fact better, what his replacement is likely to be about. If he did care so much about this country as he claims, he would stay and fight the good fight, as another moderate voice in the Senate, willing to vote on bipartisan issues as he has. Romney voted in the majority on Biden’s sweeping $550 billion transportation and infrastructure bill and also on the semiconductor production bill in 2022, which will put us on a competitive plane with China — at least that’s the hope. Some MAGA lunatic, some version of Kari Lake or Herschel Walker or Dr. Oz could be in the Senate in Romney’s old seat.

But don’t you worry about that, Mittens. Just go ride up and down in the car elevator in your house on the beach in one of California’s richest suburbs. Decide which one of your pretty cars to take out on the street, eeny meeny miney moe. You take care of you. Like always.

  1. I didn’t know the dog had a choice of cars to crate surf on! Guessing Leno and Seinfeld haven’t done this. They are the only other people I know of with car elevators. I trust either or both of them to save democracy over Mittens…I’ll tear your business asunder through hostile takeover because “I believe.”

  2. In many ways Mittens is as bad as,Trump. He is a bully. In his private high school he and a couple of others held down a kid (they thought was gay and didn’t wear attire they considered appropriate) and cut off his bleached blond longish hair. And as an elite Mormon, he was incredibly misogynist,,according to Judy Dushku, A lawyer and professor and practicing Mormon.
That he is considered a centrist says how far to the right the GOP has moved.
