It is a watershed moment when a senator brushes off the use of the Nazi salute in a public forum in the United States as though it was a harmless thing. It’s not surprising that it’s Ted Cruz doing it and with his best faux outrage persona dialed up to at least a nine.

Whether Cruz is actually “defending” the use of the Nazi salute or merely rendering it innocuous is too fine of a point for me. I don’t think that the Nazi salute or the Nazi swastika should be tolerated in this country. The salute is illegal in Germany and Austria and maybe that should take place here as well. The Germans and Austrians don’t want to encourage the reoccurrence of fascism within their borders again and that’s all the salute is, is shorthand for fascism, “viva fascism.”
It’s repugnant that Cruz would even go this far or say this much regarding the sieg heil. It may be protected speech under the First Amendment but that does mean that it should be.
I have ted cruz, but on this I can agree with him. free speech is free speech.. the ironic thing is that ted cruz called DPS to threaten me about my use of free speech when contacting him. A Texas DPS trooper called me to tell me my responses to ted were not criminal, but that she was calling me anyway. For what it is worth I used very profane language when I contacted mr cruz, but I did not use any threatening language, just insults. his threat has been somewhat successful in reducing my free speech. I have tempered my profane language a bit when contacting mr cruz. ted is if anything a major hypocrite.
That ‘free’ speech was paid for by the blood of 400,000 American boys. If he were in front of me doing that salute, I’d feel free to kick his ass on general principle. Funny, he didn’t defend the protesters at Lafayette Park when frump had them tear gassed & shot with rubber bullets. Things in principle rarely play out in practice. We didn’t go to Normandy with principles. To stop these evil bastards, we went WITH GUNS. Being in the right has never stopped evil. If so, why did a Saint like Dr. King or Ghandi catch a bullet? Those evil bastards hide behind American values WHEN IT PROTECTS THEIR SORRY ASS. Not sure if it was Jake or Elwood, but ‘I hate illinois nazis’ is one I agree with. free speech to me is also not speech without consequences. if you lose your job or business for giving nazi salutes or whatever that is a natural consequence of being an idiot just like nazi tattoos basically make you unemployable. and if someone objects to your speech you better be ready to back it up.

Free speech is indeed free speech but completely unfettered free speech is not a thing nor was it ever. The most common example: you cannot yell “fire” in a theater when there is no fire. The nazi salute is a symbol of intolerance, violence (threatened or not) and hate. It can be outlawed in schools for use by students, teachers, etc. and school boards can dictate that hate speech has no place in a school board meeting. This is yet another example of Cruz’s unfitness for office, his law license, and quite frankly his license to live amongst decent human beings.
Outside the classroom/school grounds is a different story but while on school property? No way. There are limits. The parents can take that crap outside and see what it gets them. Which of course is why they do it in a school board meeting: outside the meeting they might be subject to retaliation-someone else exercising THEIR free speech rights.
And yes old-grey-dude, Cruz is a colossal hypocrite.

I moved from Texass to Northern California last November after voting against every f—king repub. Unfortunately there are more idiot morons in Texas who continue to keep assholes like Ted crud in office. I don’t miss that effing state one bit.
