A lot of smart Republicans have left the party because the party has left them. This is not, I repeat, not, the party of Ronald Reagan, John McCain, or even Dick or Liz Cheney. The Republican party as we know it when poof one night. That night was when Donald Trump descended the escalator. A lot of us knew trouble when we saw it. Since that night, our worst suspicions have only been confirmed.
CPAC is meeting in Florida and another group, Principles First is meeting in Washington, D.C. this weekend.
More on that below. First, listen to this swine mock America while his toadies laugh.
Even by Trump’s standards, this is utterly repulsive. There has never been any former president, at any time in our history, who has ever said things like this about our country during time of conflict. Just vile. https://t.co/nQ3tFOEN4L

“On Politics” newsletter noted, it is not the only show around, there’s counter programming of sorts in Washington, D.C. with what is left of the sane portion of the GOP.
This weekend, 450 conservatives are gathering in Washington, D.C., for what organizers are billing as the anti-CPAC, the Principles First conference.
The goal is to get back to the days when conservatives debated and inspired young activists, said Mayo, the group’s 31-year-old founder. “They respected disagreements and arguments. They got up onstage and made arguments. That is why we followed them,” he said.
And while it’s not explicitly an anti-Trump gathering, the anti-Trump vibe is impossible to ignore. In the 2016 presidential primary, Mayo supported Marco Rubio, the hawkish Florida senator. The headline speakers are Representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, both Republicans who were censured by the party for their involvement in the congressional committee that is investigating the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol. Both have been vocal supporters of Ukraine.
450 Republicans. Is that what’s left of the Old Guard? Or the sane?
I cannot imagine the Democrats ending up in this boat and the irony here is that we’re the cat herd. We’re the ones who are ostensibly out of control. The old adage is, “Democrats fall in love, Republicans fall in line.” We’re supposedly too stupid to know when to do what is strategic , we’re always trying to be perfect, and we blow ourselves up in the process.
There’s some truth to that. I’m a centrist, personally, and I’ve been saying all my life that we can’t expect too much too soon, attempt to move the Overton window too far, too fast. I was in favor of Joe Biden being president when you couldn’t sell that proposition for a New York minute. It was meant with frosty silence.
All that said, I cannot imagine the Democrats self-immolating like the Republicans have done.
It’s interesting that this meet up in D.C. is called “Principles First.” Because that indeed is what happened to the GOP. They lost their principles and they lost their way. I wish the folks meeting in D.C. nothing but the best. I truly do. Because I would rather have the conflict be Democrat v. Republican than Democrat v. Autocrat. And that is who is meeting in Orlando, the Autocratic Party.
And now we have the unspeakable swine, the traitor, that you heard above, bleating treasonous dogma.
Unbelievable. Welcome to the GOP, 2022. I can’t wait for November. The bottom line here is either the Republicans do represent their voters and we are about to lose America, or the Republicans have gotten disastrously out of touch. I don’t know which.
