Poor Lindsey. He must have to keep a scorecard by his bed to keep track of whose side he’s on in the culture wars on any given day. The past two weeks the political winds have shifted and Vladimir Putin is not looking so great anymore amongst conservatives. Lindsey braved the displeasure of Fox News and he probably will do so again as they continue to waffle on where they stand on the Ukraine War issue.

Then to make things worse, Madison Cawthorn disgraced himself once again. And it looks like Graham, for one, is worried how that might affect the GOP in the midterms. WRAL:

 — U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn of North Carolina told supporters he thought Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was a “thug”—a comment that runs counter to the overwhelming share of Republicans with a favorable view of the leader fending off a military invasion from Russia.

“Remember that Zelenskyy is a thug,” Cawthorn said in a video obtained by WRAL. “Remember that the Ukrainian government is incredibly corrupt and is incredibly evil and has been pushing woke ideologies.”

It was unclear where the video was taken. Cawthorn had a number of events in the state over the weekend.

Then somebody must have picked up the phone to Cawthorn because he immediately walked it back.

On Thursday afternoon, one hour after WRAL reported the comments, Cawthorn appeared to walk back his remarks, saying on Twitter that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions are “disgusting.”

“I am praying for Ukraine and the Ukrainian people,” he added.

He also sought to justify calling Zelenskyy a “thug” by accusing the Ukrainian president of pushing “misinformation on America.” He posted a link to a conservative blog post with examples, including a story of Ukrainian soldiers on Snake Island who were feared to have been killed in a Feb. 24 Russian attack later being reported as “alive and well.”

Then Graham got involved.

Interesting that Senator Graham is doing this, right? Why can’t Minority Leader McCarthy say it? Probably because everyone in Washington knows that McCarthy has zero influence on his own caucus.

It’s interesting in any event to hear Graham go on about the GOP being pro-Ukraine. Evidently this has slipped his mind.

Cawthorn screws up routinely but today was probably his worst gaffe to date. Volodymyr Zelenskyy is an international hero right now. A Republican calling him a “thug” is the worst optics imaginable.
