If Donald Trump didn’t have a stroke in November, he’ll have one now, when he finds out his BFF Vladimir Putin has dissed him. Holey moley. Here’s what Putin said on Russian state TV. Daily Mail:

“We are exiting the coronavirus situation steadily with minimal losses, God willing, in the States, it isn’t happening that way,” Putin said.

Considering how abysmal their health care system is, compared with other countries, including the United States, that is a mouthful. Putin went on and it wasn’t complimentary.

Attacking the US response, Putin told state television that the coronavirus pandemic had exposed ‘deep-seated internal crises’ in the US.

He criticised a lack of US leadership, saying that ‘the president says we need to do such-and-such but the governors somewhere tell him where to go.’

‘I think the problem is that group interests, party interests are put higher than the interests of the whole of society and the interests of the people,’ he said.

Ouch. That last one wasn’t just a slam at Trump, that was a slam at the entire GOP. I wonder where Ron Johnson, John Bolton, Dana Rohrabacher and the rest of them will go for vacations, now? Then Putin went on to tell Trump how the big boys, the real autocrats, not the pretend ones, do it.

In Russia, he argued, the government and regional leaders work ‘as one team’ and do not differ from the official line.

‘I doubt anyone in the government or the regions would say ‘we’re not going to do what the government says, what the president says, we think it’s wrong,’ Putin said of the virus strategy.

As if this isn’t enough to make Trump’s blood boil, Putin came out and made comments on the racially sparked protests in the U.S., the first ones he has made on the issue.

‘If this fight for natural rights, legal rights, turns into mayhem and rioting, I see nothing good for the country,’ the Russian leader said in his televised broadcast.

He stressed he supported black Americans’ struggle for equality, calling this ‘a longstanding problem of the United States’.

‘We always in the USSR and in modern Russia had a lot of sympathy for the struggle of African-Americans for their natural rights,’ he insisted.

But Putin added that ‘when – even after crimes are committed – this takes on elements of radical nationalism and extremism, nothing good will come of this.’

Putin also described the protests as a sign of ‘deep-seated internal crises’ in the United States, linking the unrest to the coronavirus pandemic, which he said ‘has shone a spotlight on general problems’.

He said he nevertheless expected that the ‘fundamental basis of American democracy will allow the country to escape this series of crisis events’.

This is Putin-speak for “The United States is in the toilet,” that much is obvious. Now why would Putin say these things?

  1. He wants to make Trump look even worse to the rest of the world than he does already;
  2. He’s helping Trump cheat on this election, too, but doesn’t want to appear to be doing so;
  3. He’s giving Trump some plausibility when he says, “Nobody has been tougher on Russia than I have,”
  4. Mitch McConnell told Trump not to do Putin’s bidding re: sanctions and so Putin is taking revenge;
  5. Putin sees an opportunity to trash the United States and is taking it. He has no reason to pander to Trump because he knows Trump is going to lose the election, so screw him. The useful idiot has outlived his usefulness and Vladimir Putin is nothing if not a pragmatist. After all, he told Trump to make a fascist play and “dominate the battlefield” and Trump couldn’t pull it off.

I favor option number five, but certainly we can talk about it below. In all events, I think we know Trump’s reaction;

  1. He’ll get on Twitter and savage Putin, which should be hilarious;
  2. He’ll call Putin at the Kremlin, again, but Putin won’t take his call;
  3. He’ll lock himself in his room and eat Big Macs until he explodes.

Trump world is coming unglued. The big tent is coming down, folks. Dumbo is so embarrassed at this point that he’s going to petition the GOP to get another mascot. An ostrich would be perfect.

  1. Trump will manage to suck up to his hero Vlad & blame this turn of events on the governors, mayors & Democrats in general. It will be everyone’s fault except his or Putin’s.

  2. Options 1 and 5 are the only realistic ones to consider. Some of you may recall that I was of the opinion that Putin was cashing his chips in with Trump. This strikes me as another signal of that theory’s validity.

    He’s probably also trying to cover up the REAL carnage COVID 19 is wrecking through his country. That’s on top of the depressed oil prices, massive oil spill in their Arctic regions, tiff with oil-producing countries in the Middle East and oil-based economy taking some hits.

    • Bareshark, that was the FIRST thing that came to my mind, that Vlad was deflecting (just like tRump) to other topics to hide the horror of Covid-19 in Russia.

  3. I don’t believe anything Putin says about the virus in Russia, but he does have a clue about Himself. It will be interesting to see what the Russian bots do over the next few months.

  4. The thing about Russia that so few westerners and especially Americans don’t realize is that it has a long, long history of suffering from a massive inferiority complex. By long I’m talking well back into the time of the Czars. IOW not decades but centuries. It’s not that the country has been resource or intellectually poor, but it is a massive place geographically which makes it all the more remarkable that through an accident of geography it hasn’t had year round ports directly to the open seas. Being “landlocked” (ice actually) or having to rely on the good will of other countries at the few “choke points” that offered year round access to the sea have limited their economic growth and power. Having so many of their natural resources locked up in harsh climes also proved a hindrance although technology and transportation began to address that in the 20th century.

    When you take that into account it’s easier to understand the special resentment they hold for the United States, and infant of a country compared to their own. We too have been blessed with an abundance of natural resources, but have three vast coastlines offering year-round shipping and receiving of goods and make no mistake – sealift capability is crucial to economic as well as military might. Factor in that Stalin felt we didn’t help Russia nearly enough during WWII (and when a Russian refers to it as the Great Patriotic War it’s with a deep rooted reverence), AND that in the end we prevailed in the Cold War Russians, and not just Putin and his cronies enjoy the idea of the U.S. being knocked off its perch as the world’s leader.

    Donald Trump was a dream come true for a guy like Putin who resents the U.S. for winning the Cold War the way the goobers with their Confederate flags resent the north for winning the Civil War in our own country. He’s spent years pissing in the soup and tossing turds in the punchbowl and it’s paid off. At this point he doesn’t really need to do much of anything although he will keep at it, as in mucking around in our affairs and stirring things up. The more our institutions are damaged and the more our social fabric is torn the less influential we will be on the world stage.

    At the same time Putin has his own problems at home. There is credible reporting that Russia is being devastated by Covid-19 and if that’s true (I believe it is) then no small part of his social media warriors are having to devote time and energy to gaslighting his own people. Every bit of that he has to divert to cover his own ass is to our benefit but as we all know he’s done enormous damage to us already. That damage won’t be repaired by electing Biden and other Democrats this fall. Nor by continuing to re-elect them in 2022, 2024, 2028 and beyond.

    The “American Carnage” that was the theme of Trump’s 2016 campaign and even his inauguration is now a reality due to Trump being exactly what Putin hoped he’d turn out to be. Even if Putin hasn’t mortally wounded this country he’s inflicted massive, gaping wounds and enjoyed the hell out of doing so. That’s why I think that although he’ll continue to much around and support Trump via cyber-warfare (by getting MAGAts to refuse to believe the results no matter how badly Trump and the GOP get their asses handed to them) he’s the kind of fuckwad who would take great pleasure in privately hanging Trump out to dry – like a serial killer who engages in prolonged torture of victims just for the amusement they get from hearing victims beg Putin is the type who would take that same kind of sick pleasure from hearing Trump beg.

    Basically, Putin is at a point where he can have Trump’s “beautiful” chocolate cake and eat it too. And I can’t help but wonder now if he’s already letting Trump know that’s exactly what’s going down from here forward.

    • I’m amazed that you forgot to mention the Arkangel expedition, that ill-advised American intervention into the Oktober Revolution that was too little, too late in terms of helping the White Russians. It did a lot to turn Russia against the US, a burning resentment and mistrust that has endured for a century now.

      As to the rest, the cynic in me basically rejects your gloomy forecast on our prospects for the 2020s. Yes, we’ve had a hell of a gutting and our international reputation is basically toast at this point. But that also leaves a lot of space to rebuild and much of what got destroyed needed to go. Neither side of the American political spectrum has yet to grasp that our days as top dog are over. Both sides need to start…it’ll go a long way towards making us the country we need to be this century.

  5. This is Putin telling 45 to get his ass in gear an become more fascist. That’s how I read it. It’s not a slam on the GOP / 45 in a way that works for us but against us. Watch. 45 is going to get tougher.

    • Please…Putin told Trump all that on the call earlier this month and we ALL saw how that worked out. So Putin knows by now Trump lacks the basic willpower to go that far. Ergo, this is just the former stabbing the latter for once again flunking his Fascist Strongman Final Exam.

  6. The dick-faced weasel, aka Pootie Tootie, knows Trump-O is toast and is throwing him under the bus in an attempt to score points with Biden, so I’ll go with 5.

    …..bad news for the weasel….I don’t think Joe cares very much for him.

  7. Maybe we should tone down the pre-victory laps a bit. We need not only a decisive Electoral College win, but a popular vote win for the ages in order to repudiate Trumpism and send Trumpists scurrying back under their rocks. Or as Trump advised—we need to dominate the (electoral) battlespace.

    • Conversely, I am sick beyond belief of the opposite tendency of deciding that the past of 2016 is going to be our present. Thus, I see no harm in acknowledging that right now, things are looking good.

  8. When you’re deeply in debt to a guy like Putin you do what he wants, and the Tangerine Terdbucket owes him a lot of money. Ironically the Tangerine Terbucket is beyond comprehending the contempt that Putin views him with.

  9. Someday you will believe #TrumpHasPicksDisease we know PUTIN does now, and so does SteveBannon RudyGiuliani and Firtash as well as Europe. Today we are notifying WSJ, FT, BusinessInsider, bloomberg in case they missed the news.
    Next up is seeing to #Amendment25 right? @VP Pence?

  10. Putin has no room at all to crow about Russia’s response to Covid. That’s just one of his lies. But he isn’t slamming Republicans. He is telling Trump he ought to go full dictator. This is a very dangerous message.
