So, what do you get when you see a compilation video of Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and Chuck Grassley (in one of the clips) all listening to Mike Pence’s voice on the phone?
If you guessed “Conspiracy Theory” well bells and whistles for you, you’re well ahead of the game in D.C.-land.
In this nutty video, the first compilation features then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senator Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) hovering over a phone around 6 p.m. on January 6, 2021, the day of the deadly attack by a mob of crazed Trump supporters in a failed attempt to bar Congress from certifying Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.
Pelosi and Schumer appear to be listening to what appears to be then-Vice President Mike Pence’s disembodied voice, and yes, this has plenty of folks yelling “conspiracy theory.”
The video, posted to X by user Robert The Builder has proven to be immensely popular, having received more than 360,000 views. According to Newsweek, the second clip features a cameo appearance by Grassley (R-Iowa) who also appears to be listening intently.
As we all know, Trump has continually claimed without ever providing any credible evidence that the election was “stolen” from him.
So far, at least 1,200 Trumpertistas have been charged in the insurrection. That’s according to the latest data from the Department of Justice (DOJ). More than 400 of the brain-strained mob have been accused of assaulting or impeding law enforcement, which is a felony. In early September the DOJ’s Washington, D.C. office reported that 623 people had been sentenced, although not everyone had received jail time. Additionally, roughly 657 had pleaded guilty to federal charges, “many of whom faced or will face incarceration at sentencing.”
In the video compilation, while Pelosi and Schumer are listening during the first one, we hear Pence say: “I’m literally standing with the Chief of Police, of the U.S. Capitol Police.” The video briefly cuts out, then we hear him say “They believe that the House and the Senate will be able to reconvene in roughly an hour.”
The second clip features Pelosi and Schumer with a guest appearance by Grassley. The clip is noted as a CNN exclusive and the dialogue is more or less the same as the first.
At the conclusion of the compilation, the words “Exact same recording. Two different shots. One with Grassley—one without Grassley.”

And thus the flying monkeys — folks of the QAnon kind released their thoughts all over X. Like Just Greg, for instance, who noted:
“The whole damn thing was staged, filmed, and orchestrated by Pelosi.”

Then there’s Deplorablistic, who said:
“So they photoshopped Grassley in? Isn’t this enough evidence right there of conspiracy? Arrest them. Use their trial to produce answers, like they’re doing to trump.”

Pelosi spokesperson Aaron Bennett told Newsweek in an email Sunday:
“These incoherent conspiracy theories are nonsense. As numerous independent fact-checkers have repeatedly proven, Speaker Pelosi did not plan her own assassination.”
There were also sensible people commenting and dismissing the silly notion that the two recordings were one and the same.
This includes X user John Silks, who wrote:
“Careful. Just because there are 2 videos with people wearing masks listening to the same phone audio doesn’t mean the audio is original on both.”

“So Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer received information from Mike Pence and wanted to have Chuck Grassley, the highest ranking GOP official in the room, receive the same info,” posted X user Arthur Casey. “Unless you think Democrats opened up some kind of space-time portal, you’re always pushing conspiracies.”
Well, some QAnoniacs may well believe the Democrats did open a space-time portal. You just can’t tell with these people. They’re cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs.
The CNN clip used in the compilation was cut from a longer exclusive shown on Anderson Cooper 360. It was provided to CNN by Alexandra Pelosi, who’s the daughter of Nancy Pelosi. Alexandra also produced an HBO documentary The Insurrectionist Next Door, which was of course, about Jan. 6. The video was also posted to YouTube on October 13, 2022.
In the second clip, the dialogue is a bit more extended, and Pence tells Pelosi and Schumer:
“I’m at the Capitol building. I’m literally standing with the Chief of Police, of the U.S. Capitol Police, Steven Sund. He just informed me what you will hear through official channels. Paul Irving, your Sergeant-at-Arms, will inform you that their best information is that they believe that the House and the Senate will be able to reconvene in roughly an hour.”
Right around this point, Grassley strolls into the room and comes up to listen in on the conversation. Pence later repeats: “I was very pleased to hear from the chief. He came over, he joined me here in the basement of the Capitol to inform me they think you’ll be able to reconvene the Senate and Madame Speaker you’ll be able to reconvene the House in roughly an hour.”
The QAnoniacs and other nutters can theorize, ponder, and come up with all the nonsense that they like but it’s clear to me that these two clips have been spliced and diced. That’s the wonderful world of the internet that we all live in now.
And lastly, Newsweek notes one very clear discrepancy in the original CNN video posted on YouTube and the short clip posted on X: In the latter video, Pelosi was muted. Because of course, by doing this it makes it easier for the more dim-witted among us to believe conspiracy theory claptrap.
I’m including the YouTube video below. Enjoy.
