When I first heard about this I thought perhaps the Onion staff had a lapse in judgement. Or some other parody site or online social media “star.” That it was a gag made in bad taste. Still, I checked it out and damned if it turns out to have happened. Texas Gov. Abbott issued what at first seemed like an appropriately fitting statement marking former President Jimmy Carter’s passing. Well appropriate until that last bit of the statement which proved the whole thing was a ‘canned’ response. I’m referring to the part about ole Greg and his wife Cecelia offering condolences to First Lady Rosalynn. In addition to being a complete a-hole did Abbott become one of those “Mediums” who can communicate with the dead?
As this article from Mediaite reports the statement started off fine with the kind of rhetoric one would expect from even a political opponent:
Cecilia and I mourn the loss of former President Jimmy Carter alongside millions of Americans across the country. Our nation remains the greatest beacon of freedom and opportunity in the world because of our fearless chief executives who are our guiding force through the best and worst of times. For that, we owe President Carter our enduring gratitude for his service as the 39th President of the United States.
Well, that was nice enough. Classy even. To the point to even showing up Trumpty. Then reality set in proving it was just boilerplate bullshit concocted by staff. Either in a hurry or as I suggested earlier a long, long time ago but not checked before publishing. Or the whole bunch from Abbott on down was too classless to give a sh*t thinking no one would notice. Oops. People DID notice because of what came after the part blocked out above. Abbott’s statement added:
“Cecilia and I send our prayers and deepest condolences to First Lady Rosalynn Carter and the entire Carter family.”
Multiple outlets have reported on Abbott’s gaffe, which when the reaction started pouring in caused the statement to be revised. Still it was a “phoned in” and tone deaf thing to have done in the first place. It’s not like Carter wasn’t much longer for this world. Having a statement drafted to quickly send out is the kind of thing a big-name politician would make sure staff got done. Sort of a ‘Let’s have something ready. We’ll take a quick look when the time comes we need to release it and see if anything needs updating and get it out fast’ type of thing. Well, if that was the case that statement was written a long time ago. It seems no one bothered to read it, or remember that Rosalynn Carter passed away more than a year before her husband!
I don’t know about you but I sure remember Rosalynn Carter’s passing. Her funeral too which I watched not just to honor her memory but because I suspected it would be the last glimpse we the people would get of Jimmy Carter. Like other GOPers Abbott surely remembers it for a sh*tty reason. As in Melania Trump showing her ass and trying to make a fashion statement with her freaking coat. In pure Trumpian fashion she just HAD to take away from the proceedings a bit with a “PAY ATTENTION TO MEEEEEEEE!!!!” trash type move.
Surely Abbott chuckled over that at the time. Trump finding a way via his ‘in name only’ wife to intrude on some Democrat’s moment in the spotlight. That’s what makes his statement all the more astounding. Intentional even? Who knows? If Abbott has Presidential ambitions he can quietly put the word out to MAGAs he meant to troll the Carter family. MAGAs will eat that sh*t up with a spoon.
As for me, I know there are damned few Republicans who feel any sadness over the death of Jimmy Carter. Most will resent his official state funeral and events coming so close to the second inauguration of their Turd Emperor. I for one wish they’d all do us a favor and just STFU and stay away from everything until Carter is buried back in Plains on Jan. 10. As for Abbot, my wish is he’d watch that last Silence of the Lambs movie before going to bed tonight. Or at least a specific scene where Hannibal Lector’s finally fed up caretaker dumps him out of his wheelchair and into the pack of ravenous hogs that were supposed to consume Agent Starling. HOW I’d like Abbot to not only experience not-so-sweet dreams but a freaking nightmare! If there’s a hell he deserves to already be roasting in it.
Lack of foresight, never thinking, Always Trumper, MAGA fool and one gigantic insult. This bull cookies sticks in my craw and makes me want to hurl AFTER I cut him into tiny pieces for shark food. I bet they’ll enjoy all the extra grease and such. But goddamn the INSULT about kills me. I don’t get this. at all.
