Mirrors on the ceiling, the pink champagne on ice. And she said, “We are all just prisoners here, of our own device.”   The Eagles   Hotel California

By now you’re all familiar with most of the more popular aspects of pirate lore, so brilliantly portrayed in the spectacular Disney franchise, Pirates of the Caribbean. Captain  Davy Jones, the eternal, wicked Captain of The Flying Dutchman, offering wayward sailors their darkest desires in return for their servitude as crew members on his ship, 100 years before the mast!

And as I suffer my way through the cringe worthy coverage of the Trump Manhattan trial, I can’t help it. This sleazy spectacle is pathetic, like a bunch of Incels down in their basement bedroom, sniggering over their purloined copy of Daddy’s Hustler magazine.

And I can’t help but think of this trial as Davy Jones’s Ship of the Damned, and when you look at it in plain light, almost every goddamn character that has appeared in Judge Merchan’s court is truly A prisoner of their own device.

In this trial, not a single witness nobody wants to be there. In a normal criminal trial, the victim wants to be there to explain what happened to them, and why the defendant should pay. The police officers and detectives, as well as the evidence techs are happy to be there, to present the jury with their experience, expertise, and evidence to get the victim justice. But in the Trump trial, absolutely wants to be in that courtroom, taking part;

  • Donald Trump sure as sh*t doesn’t want to be there. His Teflon Don persona is crumbling before his eyes, Stormy Daniels just exposed to the world his inadequacy as a man, and with every witness that testifies, he realizes he’s inching closer to a criminal conviction
  • I can’t believe that the lead prosecutor wants to be there. He’d rather be prosecuting a drug dealing pimp from Harlem, it’s classier. The first thing he must do after court is to go home and take a one hour hot shower, desperately trying to sluice off the slime from the day’s proceedings
  • David Pecker sure as sh*t didn’t want to be there. He’s a 72 year old man who exposed worldwide as a sleazy, opportunistic grifter who used his empire to shovel unadulterated bullsh*t to the lowest denominator of this country that can actually read
  • Keith Davidson would rather have been anywhere else, having root canal sans anesthesia. Davidson comes across as a legal semi extortionist, threatening exposure for sorry morons in return for a payoff, one step against a state bar ethics complaint
  • Stormy Daniels may have been looking forward to finally confronting the arrogant, sexist pig who made her life a misery, but she couldn’t have been looking forward to spending a day on cross examination, with Trump’s female shark try to demean and besmirch her personally, and rip her personal and professional choices, calling her an extortionist
  • Hope Hicks didn’t want to to be within 1000 miles of court. A gullible young woman that became so close to Trump that the family considered her an adoptive daughter, was reduced to tears when testifying against her surrogate father and mentor, knowing what her words were doing to his case. But she bucked up and did the right thing
  • Rhona Graff didn’t want to be there, testifying as to the Trump Organization process for getting disbursement checks to sign when he was in the White House
  • Neither did Madeleine Westerhout, who broke down in tears on the stand while describing Trump’s processes for signing Trump Organization checks in the White House, including the fact that His Lowness would call Allan Weisselberg if he had any questions about the reason for the disbursement. That never happened with checks to Michael Cohen
  • The only witness actually looking forward to testifying against El Pendejo President is Michael Cohen, and even then the logic is convoluted. Cohen has a hard on for Trump, not only because Trump blithely abandoned a faithful employee to prison while escaping accountability scot free, but then for trying to use the United States Department of Justice to try to muzzle Cohen from speaking truth to power. Trump has cost Cohen his law license, his dignity, and his reputation. All things being equal, I bet that Cohen fervently wishes that the whole f*cking thing never happened!

We are all just prisoners here, of our own device. Here’s a helpful courtroom watching hint for you. When the prosecution is presenting its case, and multiple prosecution witnesses admit from the stand that they’re only there under subpoena to testify, they really don’t want to be there.

The eye of the black hole is Trump. Whether innocent employees like Hicks, Graff, or Westerhout, or already bottom feeding scumbags like Cohen, Davidson and Pecker, they were all just out there, swimming happily in their own little pools until all of them were swept into the vortex of Trump. And now, in one way or another, all of their lives are irrevocably f*cked up.

Some people would call it a tragi-comic spectacle, but it isn’t. There’s nothing funny about it, and it isn’t really tragic simply because most of them went into this with their eyes wide open, knowing what they were getting into. What it is is sad, sleazy, and pathetic, totally undeserving of a former President of the United States. The penny dreadfuls of Elizabethan England wouldn’t publish this sh*t, but now the whole world is watching. It’s a national embarrassment.

  1. Murf don’t forget the Eagle’s line that should burn in diaper Don’s mind: you can check out any time you like, but YOU CAN NEVER LEAVE! Welcome to the swamp where quicksand reigns! The more you struggle, the deeper you sink.

    • Given how no matter what most MAGAs are still in thrall to Trump, AND that despite all others who aren’t MAGAs have learned about him the fact he’s polling anywhere above twenty percent reminds me of another line from that song: They (meaning us, normal people) stab it with their steely knives but they just can’t kill the beast.” We can chop up Trump like the King does to the Black Night in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and the Knight will refuse to concede defeat and talk trash. And MAGAs would come out of the woods to cheer HIM and not the King.

  3. The Honest Whore is an early Jacobean play in two parts which is what I suspect you meant. exe English major here and I had two semesters of grad levelnElizabethan and Jacobean drama.
My college had no actual.undergrad classes for English so.we took grad level ones. I had to tekl.a couple if profs I wasn’t going for my doctorate, was just a lowly junior , because they assumed. I was a grad because my papers were too good according to.them.

Penny Dreadfuls are 19th c. trash novels. Think.Jacqueline Susann or Mickey Spillane or Sidney Sheldon. Or anything by a right-wing preacher.

  4. As Rick Wilson says “everything trump touches dies”. More people need to wake up to this axiom to save ourselves from this monster. No one else will rescue us.
