It took a little under 70 years for the Russians to achieve their stated end game. In 1956 Nikita Khrushchev ringingly declared, “We will take you over without firing a shot. We will take you over from within.” And lo, it has come to pass. Not a shot has been fired, no paratroopers falling out of the sky, no atomic submarines coming to our shores, nothing like that. It has been far more insidious and subtle, finally culminating 69 years after the then-Soviet premier’s prediction with a presidential envoy claiming that the murderous KGB agent currently in power in the Kremlin is “not a bad guy.”

No, he’s a terrific guy, we are told, one of great sensitivity and religious leanings. Vladimir Putin was moved to go to church the day of Trump’s Butler, Pennsylvania assassination attempt and pray for his “friend.” Isn’t that moving?

In an interview with right-wing podcast host Tucker Carlson, the envoy said he has come to regard Putin as not a “bad guy,” and that the Russian president was a “great” leader seeking to end Moscow’s deadly three-year conflict with Kyiv.

“I liked him. I thought he was straight up with me,” Witkoff said in the interview aired Friday.

“I don’t regard Putin as a bad guy. That is a complicated situation, that war, and all the ingredients that led up to it.”

He also described a “personal” element of the discussion in which Putin recalled his reaction to the assassination attempt on Trump in July 2024 as the Republican held a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

Putin “told me a story… about how when the president was shot, he went to his local church and met with his priest and prayed for the president,” Witkoff said.

“Not because… he could become the president of the United States, but because he had a friendship with him and he was praying for his friend.”

Putin had commissioned a “beautiful portrait of President Trump from a leading Russian artist,” and asked the envoy to take it home to Trump, Witkoff added.

“It was such a gracious moment.”

I can’t find a picture of the portrait of Comrade Krasnov but hopefully it will become available at some point. The level of propaganda that we live with is dazzling these days. Nothing short of dazzling. I hope that we can eventually come out of this tailspin we’re in. At least Jon Ossoff sees this situation for what it is. That’s encouraging.

This is what’s real. Trump is seeking to be an oligarchic dictator on the level of Putin. That’s what this is all about. This is the level this battle needs to be fought on. Let’s hope other elected officials, from both parties, take Ossoff’s lead. As for Witkoff, he is totally in Putin’s pocket.

Zoomers, if you can afford a donation to help keep overhead costs paid in this depressed and dreary time, we would appreciate it. I have complete faith that people will return to politics at some point but I don’t blame anybody for being burned out. Not with what we see here every day, kakistocracy on steroids. If you’ve already donated, thank you again. Ursula

  1. “That is a complicated situation, that war, and all the ingredients that led up to it.”

    No, it’s not complicated.

Russia and the USA signed an agreement with Ukraine where Ukraine gave up trillions of dollars in nuclear weapons in exchange for security guarantees from The USA and Russia.

Then, only a few years later after it’s interference in Ukraine’s democratic process was stymied by Ukrainian democracy, Russia invaded Ukraine and said it wasn’t a real country.

Ukrainians disagreed with this and fought back and continue to fight back about it, and attempt to repel the invaders.

The USA, despite the security guarantee they had signed did nothing to help Ukraine for many years, then briefly did quite a bit, but not enough, then elected into power a complete moron who is a secret Russian agent and who tried to help the Russians, and at the same time, destroy NATO, the North American and European security alliance set up decades ago to stop Russia invading European countries like Ukraine.

And that is where we are today.

    Simple.

Not complicated, unless you’re a moron, like the elected leader mentioned.

  2. Putin’s little story about the fake assassination attempt on Drumpf is so bogus that Drumpf may as well have told it himself. The Butler Incident took place after 6pm EDT which would’ve been just after 1am in Moscow. Somehow, I can’t see Putin being wide awake at 1 in the morning (unless, of course, he was behind the whole thing in the first place and was awaiting details of the operation) and then just going to a local church and praying with the priest.
