Maybe demagogues are born, not made. If you’ve ever watched the newsreels of the young Adolph Hitler, fresh out of prison and on his way to take over Berlin, you’ve seen the juncture where Hitler gets worked up, the rhetoric gets heated, and then the crowd goes nuts. That’s the formula.
If you watched Donald Trump at the Lincoln Dinner in Michigan tonight, you saw Trump get worked up on a scale of one to two. The rhetoric never gets above lukewarm, as he sing songs the same tired old phrases, MARXists, LEFTists, COMMunists, where are my sleeping pills, Melania? Did you give them to the crowd? They seem already asleep.
And the applause was not wild. If this is Trump’s answer to Berlin, 1933, it’s got a ways to go.

Look, I’ve been to a rock concert or two in my life. I think most of us have. The iffy way that this starts up sounds for all the world like an “applause” sign went on, and somebody with cue cards began working the crowd. And bear in mind, these are MAGAs out to hear the cult leader. Throwing red meat to them ought to get a bit more of a response than it did — such as the kind of response Trump got in 2016. Then, the vitriol was fresh and the crowds were howling. And it was terrifying. Not so tonight, I am pleased to say.

I like that thought of Clarence Darrow’s. I think this is as good a spot as any to end on.
The Michigan GQP is run by that crazy woman Karamo, who thankfully lost the SoS race in the midterms. Anyway, if they elected her chair they must be ultra MAGA. So, if they aren’t thrilled with TFG’s recycled rhetoric, he must be losing his base. Which makes me wonder who the pollsters are polling. If a bought and paid for built-in audience isn’t ecstatic at his mere presence, who would be? Maybe these indictments are finally sinking into some pretty dense heads.
As always, the secret is to get out the vote. Yes, Trump is polling so high among Republicans because nobody else generates any enthusiasm. But as you pointed out, this is the hard core. The hard core back in South Carolina, for instance, in 2016, was climbing the walls when they heard this stuff. They were swinging from the chandeliers. This is a tepid response by comparison. If a cult crowd can only bring this much enthusiasm, then a “real” crowd, meaning Independents, Democrats, etc. is going to be a completely different result.
And Trump himself seems bored.

they don’t think they are fascist, they are nationalist and patriots who believe in God and Country. they think the left is fascist. that’s the main problem. you will never convince them that they might be the baddies and they will willing don jack boots and round up the trannies and the libtards while taking back their God given right to supremacy over the brown and yellow people. that is the audience and if Trump can’t excite them anymore the GOP will find someone who does. elections are inconvenient and expensive and they would rather line their pockets and keep control by fiat than allow democracy.
