Where was this in the campaign? How did Donald Trump not run on the “I will be the president that ends daylight savings time!” platform – and get about 10% of the vote because, just eye-balling things here, I suspect about 90% of Americans love daylight savings time! Yes, we love it when over the holidays, we’re all snug and warm at 4:30 p.m. as it gets dark, and then yes – in that first week of July, in the northern parts of the country, getting out of that late movie and still seeing a sunset, we love it – don’t we? I Have to believe that most people agree.
The U.S. started with Daylight Savings Time 100 years ago in an attempt to use less energy, something that some deemed important back then. Now? People just like it. And then some… the tourism industry loves it. Later tee times, later dinner tables, stretch those vacations out – they will always take another hour of evening. So what is Trump’s deal? It seems as though he wants to “Spring forward” next March and then… Never change the clock again. So we would always be in daylight savings time – Or he just wants it bagged all together. As reported by The New York Times:
President-elect Donald J. Trump called daylight saving time “inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation” in a social media post on Friday and said the Republican Party would try to “eliminate” it, in the latest effort to end the twice-yearly time change.
Yeah. Except, hold up, Ace. If this thing was so costly to us as a nation, I would have thought we’d have noticed. Perhaps we have just “priced that in” because we like the time change that much. Odd. Back to the article:
Most states change their time by one hour — in March, when clocks spring forward, and in November, when clocks fall back.Over the years, many elected officials, including Mr. Trump, have expressed support for ending the changes.
“Making Daylight Saving Time permanent is OK with me!” Mr. Trump posted on social media in March 2019.
The Republican Party will use its best efforts to eliminate Daylight Saving Time, which has a small but strong constituency, but shouldn’t! Daylight Saving Time is inconvenient, and very costly to our Nation.

The guy doesn’t like dogs! And the feeling is apparently mutual. He is going to find positions like this and sit on them. I cannot figure out why he doesn’t like the time changes. I did some research and the argument goes back to some health concerns and light pollution, the power usage is a complete wash because we’re all on our screens now. According to “Time and Date” the biggest pros are:
Proponents of DST argue that longer evenings motivate people to get out of the house. The extra hour of daylight can be used for outdoor recreation like golf, soccer, baseball, running, etc. That way, DST may counteract the sedentary lifestyle of modern living.
The tourism industry profits from brighter evenings. Longer evenings give people more time to go shopping, to restaurants, or to other events, boosting the local economy.
Exactly. Now it is on Trump to tell us how it costs us so much money because I cannot figure it out. Good thing that he needs Congress to do anything. Congress has to know about the 90% – 10% thing, right? They want to win elections. They wouldn’t go so far as to do whatever he tells them to do?
Gulp. Call your congressman. Protect that late movie light!

I guess that if you have always been a rich laze-about, who has never had to stay within the doors of a workplace from 9 to 5, then having more daylight hours in which to enjoy life after those confining hours does not matter. But to the rest of us who must spend 8-9 hours working in confined spaces, that extra hour of summer daylight at the end of a long workday matters. It allows an extra hour in which to garden, hike, or play sports.
But of course, Trump give no thought to improving quality of life for us peons.
Here in Arizona Daylight Savings Time was never adopted except for on the Navajo Reservation. We’ve survived. I guess because we have plenty enough sunshine to suit us right down to our toes!
Just consider this another fucking DISTRACTION. It avoids them talking about REAL ISSUES, like immigration reform and all the rest of the Project 2025 playbook. Don’t worry, there should be at least one or two of these a week; see UFOs in New Jersey.
Yah, you betcha, “north of you”…Trump can’t flood the zone with shit unless he floods the zone with shit! I think even the big issues you cite are distractions from the biggest issue of all…the robber barons are actively robbing and we are chasing “squirrels!”
Think twice about “most” people wanting/liking Daylight Saving Time. It is bad for our health as it interrupts sleep patterns especially in the Spring, but also in Fall. I, for one, would like to go to bed/sleep when it’s getting dark in summer, not in daylight at 9:00 p.m. I need to get up early enough to enjoy some cool work time in the garden from Spring to Fall. With our climate catastrophe we need to make better use of the early hours of the day. While I despise Mr. Trump, I will push for abolition of DST. Let’s get back to real time, or as some call it, God’s time.
I agree. I hate every moment of DST. My circadian rhythm is all screwed up for those miserable months. Also, year-round DST would mean that a whole lot of kids have to go to school in the dark during the winter. That. Would. Suck.
tRump has no clue whether people like DST or hate it, and he doesn’t care. He gets an idea about something and runs with it. There is no thought or research involved. If DonOld likes an idea, he thinks he’s a king so he can just decree that it’s so.
