I confess to not knowing what the appeal of this iteration of the Republican party could have to a 27-year-old actress who surely is in touch with Donald Trump’s fascist ways. Hollywood is a true melting pot. People from all over the world work together and win Emmys and Oscars as a matter of course. Trump has made it clear that he hates all that. The year that the South Korean film Parasite won the Oscar, Trump trashed the film and talked about the “great” films that Hollywood used to make. Parasite is a great film. It deserved the Oscar. The script was first rate and so was the execution of the script on all levels. It was assumed at the time that Trump was making his usual disparaging racist crack. And this is who Sydney Sweeney wants to align herself with? Apparently so.
Sydney Sweeney registered as a Republican voter in Florida a few months before Donald Trump won a second US presidency, it has been revealed, as the public continues fixating on a new jeans ad campaign featuring the actor and a pun about her genes.
The Euphoria and White Lotus star registered to vote in Florida on 14 June 2024 – shortly after buying a mansion in the Keys – and listed her party affiliation as Republican, according to publicly available records reviewed by the Guardian on Sunday. That was about two weeks after Trump, another registered Republican Florida voter, was convicted in New York City of criminal falsification of business records and before he secured a return to the White House in November’s presidential election.
Sweeney’s a real champion of the rule of law. Good to know. And I guess she’s okay with the insurrection as well, amirite?
It was also about two years after Sweeney, 27, faced criticism from some US media consumers after she was photographed at her mother’s birthday party where several of the guests were seen wearing hats that called to mind those which bear Trump’s “Make America Great Again” (Maga) slogan. The native of Spokane, Washington, subsequently issued a statement on social media pleading with the public to “stop making assumptions”.

“An innocent celebration … has turned into an absurd political statement, which was not the intention,” Sweeney’s statement added at the time.
Sweeney has not addressed her Florida Republican voter registration, the existence of which went viral on social media on Saturday and was later reported on by traditional news outlets.
The actor by then had generated considerable media coverage after the outfitter American Eagle released several videos showing her modeling the company’s denim jeans and jackets. American Eagle’s campaign generally revolves around the punny use of the phrase, “Sydney Sweeney has great genes.”
In one video, “genes” is crossed out and replaced with “jeans”. Another clip showed the blue-eyed blond suggestively looking at the camera and discussing how her body’s composition “is determined by … genes”.
“Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue,” Sweeney continues in the advertisements, which include a joke about the cameraperson becoming distracted by her breasts.
Maybe that’s the level of identification with Trump, self-obsession and self glorification above all. And maybe Sweeney supports Trump because as somebody with money she figures her interests will be looked out for and screw the little people who need Medicaid and SNAP to survive. And I guess she figures the tariff madness won’t affect her and she can withstand inflation just fine. I sincerely wish that Sweeney would tell the world just what makes her a Trump lover. I would like to know. Or, maybe she’s just a dumb shallow bitch with money and that’s the identification with Trump. Occam’s Razor is frequently the most effective tool to use.
Trump, for his part, when he heard that Sweeney was a Republican said, “Oooh, now I really love her ad.” And he went on to praise her and the ad on Truth Social. (He had to repost it twice because of typos but he managed it.)

Trump dictates who is hot and who is not. If I had a choice, I’d rather be Taylor Swift right now than Sydney Sweeney. Yes, Sweeney is young and hot and gets roles. But she hasn’t had an incredible break out role that really defines her and a lot of hot young ingenues flame out after a few years if they don’t demonstrate that they have it going on on a different level. Hollywood is filled with stories of the 20-something ingenue who hits town and starts work and then becomes the 40-something still looking for the big break.
Or, who knows? Maybe Sweeney will now be the MAGA goddess. Maybe she can work opposite Kevin Sorbo and Kid Rock. What an achievement.
Color me baffled. But then the Cult of Trump has always baffled me, from the very beginning to now, and I suspect I will continue to be baffled long after he’ll be in the grave.

I thought the whole “thing” about the wordplay in that ad was stupid. It’s been used before for chrissakes. People blow up small and frankly stupid shit into BFDs and LOOK stupid in the process. I wouldn’t care except sometimes they give conservatives an easy shot at painting all of us with a broad brush. So some jeans manufacturer found a model who’s currently getting attention to hawk their jeans in an ad campaign featuring a well-worn pun. Those who wanted to make it into a “thing” deserve scorn and ridicule.
As for Sweeney yes she’s been blessed with the kinds of genes that give her curves most men (and women for that matter) would agree are eye-catching. So what? I couldn’t figure why people were so taken with her for a long time because for so long the pictures I saw were of her TRYING to look sultry/seductive/sexy. For me a lot of women who try that are clearly trying too hard which for me has always been a turn off. When I saw some pictures of her smiling only then did I think yeah, she’s quite attractive.
As for whether she’s got acting talent I don’t have a clue. Never seen anything she’s been in. In that sense she’s like Katy Perry or Taylor Swift to me musically – I couldn’t identify or sing a single line from ANY of either’s songs. I’m a classic rock and opera guy. But hey, each has a huge following. And has had one for quite a long time. As you say Sweeney is just starting out and it remains to be seen if she’s got what it takes to move forward and have a career of substance.
But since I wouldn’t watch a movie just because she’s in it means I really don’t give a f**k who she votes for unless she speaks out like Swift did.
