This is one of those “a picture is worth a thousand words” moments. Donald Trump was doing his usual stand up comedy routine in his cabinet meeting this morning. Then it came time for Pete Hegseth to speak. You notice how Hegseth is seated right next to Trump. That’s key. And Hegseth is doing his usual evasion dance about how everything was proper about the murders of people who were still alive admidst the wreckage of the ship that was blown up. Hegseth calls his evasion, “the fog of war.” Is that the fog that has Hegseth keyed up, or does he simply need a drink, and badly?
So he didn’t see survivors, but the strike was still the ‘right call’? Logic, apparently, is optional.

And it’s all the fault of the press. Everything would be jim dandy if only the press would publish what a hero and a genius Hegseth is and not go on with these pesky details about the definitions of war crimes and how killing civilians is murder. That’s so inconvenient.
Hegseth has done his best DARVO (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offense) and it’s not working. Telling the press that they don’t understand and they’re irresponsible is no defense. It’s very weak tea, in fact. And that’s the best he’s got, is that the press made him look bad. And maybe that’s true and maybe the Devil made him do it, but that’s an even weaker argument still.
You may have observed Trump smirking a bit, with his eyes closed, as Hegseth attacked the press. Trump doesn’t want to get rid of Hegseth but I still say that the time will come in the not too distant future where Hegseth becomes more of a liability than an asset. Watch then for Hegseth to become the next Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Nobody thought that Greene and Trump would ever be on the outs, but you saw it take place. You saw Trump do a 180 on her. It could very well happen to Hegseth, exactly the same way.
I’d say Hegseth is on his last leg right now. One more screw up will probably be it for him. His excuses are the very definition of lame.

Maybe a couple of Scaramuccis at the most.
The only reason he is still there is because Trump can’t gracefully dump him. If the heat gets turned up too much higher, though, Trump may find a way. Just think of how Marge Greene got excommunicated. It can and will happen to anybody. It’s Trump’s call now and as soon as he can find some graceful exit for Hegseth, Hegseth will be gone.
