Mark Twain is rolling in his grave right now, saddened that his literary birthplace is being trashed by such a buffoon. States are assigned names, depending on some salient feature. Arizona is the Grand Canyon State, California the Golden State and Nevada used to be the Silver State until Donald Trump renamed it two days ago. Now it’s “a disgraceful state,” in his words. Trump was giving an interview to what I presume to be a right-wing outlet, the Nevada Globe. I make that assumption based on the fact that its founder used to work for the Daily Caller, Washington Times and OANN.

The reporter said to Trump, “You lost Nevada twice. How do you win Nevada?” (Pro tip: Don’t call the place Nev-ahhh-duh, as Trump has in the past.)

Trump’s reply:

I think I won the last time. I think I won both times by a lot.

This is a state that is disgraceful.

You know, we sued on the basis of …they robbed the vote at a level.

We had a lawsuit that was so good and the judge didn’t want to see it. He didn’t even want to see it.

We had a lawsuit that was, in my opinion, conclusive.

But, you know, we have guys like Laxalt. Laxalt was a very weak candidate. He was pathetic.

You know, I helped Laxalt do the best he could. I guess his grandfather was strong. His father was good. But, I guess the chain got weaker and weaker.

But, Adam Laxalt is a stiff and he didn’t do the job. He was a lawyer. He was working for a lot of different people on trying to do the vote thing, but he wasn’t the right guy.

We have great people working now. We have great lawyers working.

They used COVID to cheat the last time. They used COVID to cheat.

But, we think we have a great team in place to stop it.

Trump, the anti-Dale Carnegie. Forget about “How To Make Friends and Influence People,” he’ll tell you how to make enemies and alienate everybody.

    • That’s the uniform. Some sage decided that a “cheap-ish” looking suit would endear the candidate to voters whereas a really sharp suit (like a successful lawyer might wear to court) would alienate people. And that’s on both sides of the aisle.

So this is what you’re stuck with.

  2. “Nuh-vah-duh” is the second-listed pronunciation in my desk dictionary; “Nuh-va-duh” is the first. If the state’s voters reject Trump because he uses the second pronunciation rather than the first, they have their priorities totally out of line. If Trump’s pronunciation of their state’s name is more important to Nevada voters than his policies and behavior, they need counseling.
