Expect the Trump/McConnell divorce to come into bas relief, if not escalate wildly altogether, in the coming week, because Donald Trump has chosen his reemergence into the political mainstream. On Sunday, Trump will give the closing speech at CPAC (Conservative Political Action Committee) and that is expected to be the rallying cry to not only the base, but to any GOPers who might be hanging undecided on the sidelines — or, God help them, who support Mitch McConnell’s plans to be rid of him. This is either wishful thinking on Trump’s part, or McConnell be damned, Trump is running the party. If Trump has his way, a week from now the political conversation will be very different. Axios:

In his first post-presidential appearance, Donald Trump plans to send the message next weekend that he is Republicans’ “presumptive 2024 nominee” with a vise grip on the party’s base, top Trump allies tell Axios.

What to watch: A longtime adviser called Trump’s speech a “show of force,” and said the message will be: “I may not have Twitter or the Oval Office, but I’m still in charge.” Payback is his chief obsession.

Axios has learned that Trump advisers will meet with him at Mar-a-Lago this week to plan his next political moves, and to set up the machinery for kingmaking in the 2022 midterms.

  • Trump is expected to stoke primary challenges for some of those who have crossed him, and shower money and endorsements on the Trumpiest candidates.
  • State-level officials, fresh off censuring Trump critics, stand ready to back him up.

Why it matters: Trump’s speech Sunday at CPAC in Orlando is designed to show that he controls the party, whether or not he runs in 2024.

  • His advisers argue that his power within the GOP runs deeper and broader than ever, and that no force can temper him.

  • “Trump effectively is the Republican Party,” Trump senior adviser Jason Miller told me. “The only chasm is between Beltway insiders and grassroots Republicans around the country. When you attack President Trump, you’re attacking the Republican grassroots.”

We do know for a fact that we’ve seen the formal censure of Republican luminaries such as Liz Cheney, Ben Sasse and even McConnell himself in his home state of Kentucky. That is expected to continue, as Trump’s reign of terror keeps rolling and presumably escalates.

The battle here is Trumpism over conservatism and fascism over democracy. And of course, the art of the steal is first, foremost and paramount. Trump’s got $75 Million in his First America PAC and if he can grift more, then that’s what he’s going to do. Remember, this is a man with a lot of legal problems and who is hemorrhaging assets right now. Tiffany’s jewelers is pulling out of Trump Tower, to the tune of $7 Million in lost revenue and that’s got to be painful. He needs to make up the shortfall somehow, and have money for legal defense, and so expect a real show at CPAC.

  1. Let’s keep perspective here. The only reason he’s doing this is because this is the only thing he’s got any power and control over. Everything else has slipped through his fingers and never coming back.

  2. I don’t shed any tears for the Senate mutant ninja turtle and the gang. They had a chance to put that dog down but couldn’t locate their balls.
That said, it’s a safe bet that the Dumbocrats will find a way to eff things up

    • Eff that last sentiment for the unhelpful, counterproductive nonsense it is. It’s a whole new party for a whole new world when it comes to the Dems. I’m waiting on people to finally figure that out.

      • There is a faction of people whose natural political home would seem to be the Democratic party, but who constantly seem to be working to undermine the Democratic party on behalf of the Republicans. Though they vehemently deny it, they may well have disadvantaged Bernie during the primaries.

These are the people who loudly proclaimed that “everybody” knows “you don’t run an establishment candidate against a populist (like Trump).” I kept telling them that no, that is not a given, to which they got all arrogant about how stupid the rest of us are. We know the Trump campaign used them to scare some of his voters away from the voting for Biden. It is part of where Trump’s dismaying 74 million voters came from, and part of the the 42% of Trump voters, who after Jan 6, said they would not vote for Trump if he were the candidate in 2024.

  3. “I may not have Twitter or the Oval Office, but I’m still in charge.”
Rabid dogs get put down! His statement says trump is obviously rabid! Draw your own conclusions! My fear is simple it is no longer red vs blue its Democracy vs Tyranny. We slipped through 1-6-21 we came as close to losing Democracy as we ever have! if this rabid dog gets back in office? I fear America is over! America is by no means perfect but is sure as hell beats the other options! It might be as with Germany during Hitlers reign, that they just had to go through it and then had to fight like hell to get back any form of Democracy? With any luck the “mob” atty that Vance has hired will resolve this all by putting trump where he belongs…………in a Federal prison locked away with all the other criminals for the rest of his criminal life!

  4. The Party of tRump, with its balls in a vise grip, is the best thing to happen for Democrats ever. The Big Lie may reach farther than the cult, but tRump’s cult base is becoming diminishingly small and dependent on classic voter suppression. To be sure, these are not vanishingly small issues, but time and facts are not on their side.

  5. America was never intended to be a Democracy. It was formed as a Constitutional Republic by our forefathers, protecting individual rights, not the popular political trend of the day, which is what we see under the Democratic Party. For too long, the rights of the individual have been suppressed for the political trends. The popular trends which are often far too liberal and unconstitutional. This is when we see riots, looting, disrespect for law and order, rising criminal activity such as assault and murder, illegal immigration, unemployment, poor quality education, hatred, violence, loss of morals and belief in God, and foreign interference in our country and our lives. This is what you are seeing today, and it started as soon as Joe Biden took the oath of office, some of it started last summer, but when President Trump tried to stop it, he was met with resistance and hatred. You all voted for it, and some of you fraudulently voted, or were paid to demonstrate and vote against President Trump. It was so obvious to the American people, and this will come back to haunt you. President Trump accomplished so much for the American people while fighting impeachment and unrelentless hatred from Democrats and the media, all corrupt, power hungry, and only out to protect themselves from the evil of the wealthy and elite who rule them. Those of you who are so blind or filled with hatred cannot see the forest for the trees, you might want to educate yourselves and do some research on the candidates before you vote next time. There are a few who are good people, but many are truly dishonest and evil. In both parties. Having said that, the GOP is the original conservative party, and always stands for individual rights. A few have betrayed their oath of office and moved far to the left. They should be voted out or join the Democrats, or retire. We all know who they are, and what they represent. Themselves. In any case, we are doomed as long as we continue down Joe Biden’s unlawful, immoral, and demented path. May God have mercy on us all….

    • False you say? Try getting your rear out of faux news & realize u are a liar like your boy who has proven to be a pathological liar. Hard to tell over 30,000 lies in 4 years. Congrats he is the #1 liar & serial killer ever. Admitted on tape he knew all about the killer virus a year ago & has lied ever since. Why, I bet you can’t even look at the inauguration pics for Obama & Trump & ADMIT which is the bigger crowd. Grow up, get real or stuff it up ur keyster. Cult member.

    • You might want to educate yourself first before you lecture others. Of course that would mean forsaking right wing propaganda. The mission of right wing propaganda is to deceive their target audience, but even worse their target audience, (looking at you, Susan) wants to be deceived.

  6. People like Steve Bannon and Michael Flynn will keep propping up Trump until he’s no longer useful to their goal of establishing a fascist regime. There are any number of ambitious, younger candidates who want to take center stage. Democrats may believe that a split within the GOP is a good thing, but rising fascism in the US is a dangerous threat.

  7. We’re seeing this in Ohio now, with the two declared GOP candidates for Rob Portman’s sense seat playing a game of chicken to declare themselves the Trumpiest candidate of all time. It will be interesting to see where things go as far as the public mood and whether this will be an asset in a general election or not. A lot can change in two years.

  8. Geez, I’m not sure what all this fear of Trump is about. Having stolen 2016 from the outside, this piece of crap that passes for a human had the bully pulpit for 4years, the help of Putin, had the senate, the house & the supreme court, & COULDN’T PULL IT OFF! Stop looking in the rear view mirror. Time to kick ass & take names.
