I am deeply grateful that Jimmy Carter breathed his last breath today because at least Joe Biden and the Carter family have a chance to put together a proper commemoration. Donald Trump would not do so, had Carter lived another month and died on January 29, of that you may be certain. Trump trashed Carter in his last weeks on earth, blaming him for “giving away” the Panama Canal. You know how Trump operates. He couches everything in tribal terms. John McCain was a RINO, so he got no honors due him from the White House when he passed — although everybody else in Washington did an end run around Trump and McCain had no end of commemoration and services.
Today as our nation observes the passing of the 39th President of these United States, the 45th and 47th president hadn’t said word one on Twitter, because that’s where most of the action is. He did make a statement on Truth Social which was not reposted to his Twitter account and I’m sure that’s deliberate. This is called having your cake and eating it too. Here’s what most of MAGA is seeing.
He never gave away the Panama Canal. It was always the property of Panama leased to the USA. It’s disrespectful and disgraceful to pedal a lie at this time.

Here’s what is on Truth Social, which has very little traffic compared to Twit/X.

Trump just had to talk about how only a president can understand “the enormous responsibility.” Yeah, the ones who actually did the job felt that. They didn’t stroll into the Oval Office at 11:30 a.m. and start watching Fox News. The only way Trump can deal with Carter’s passing is to avoid it, because if he doesn’t then he’s contradicting his own conspiracy theory about Carter giving away the Panama Canal.
I’m sure Trump was persuaded by cooler heads to do the right thing and sound like a statesman and responsible adult for 30 seconds. To do otherwise is going to look very bad and play out even worse with the rest of the country and the world. Remember, we have an incoming president who got into office with a plurality, not a majority and a tiny sliver (less than 1.5%) of the popular vote. He calls this an “overwhelming mandate” because of course he does. Dealing with problematic facts has never been Trump’s strong suit.
The world observes Carter’s passing as condolences and remembrances pour in from both parties in this country and from all over the world for the Nobel Peace Prize winning Carter, who built Habitat For Humanity Homes — and we mean “built.” He got up on stepladders and pounded nails in two by fours at the age of 80. Trump’s relative silence only makes him look petty and vindictive and that is what and who he is. He could cut a video right now and say what he said on Truth Social but he doesn’t want to compliment Carter when he needs to use Carter as a whipping post. I would say it’s another black eye for America but unless we have rows of eyes like spiders, our two national eyes can’t get any blacker.
Jimmy Carter had the most interesting post presidency of probably any former president in our history. Trump, when out of office, complained, grifted, and played golf. We still don’t know if there’s a Trump Presidential Library in the offing for the future. At this point, I would lay 50/50 odds that such a thing will never be built, unless he sees a way to make money off of it. In which case it would become a MAGA merchandise store, far more than a library.
Let us be grateful in the extreme as Americans that we can honor Carter as he so deserves. Joe Biden has time. It would be a tragedy indeed for Carter to have died during the Trump administration.
Thank God Carter’s death happened now. Sometimes the winds of fortune do blow in our favor. This is one of those times.

Carter would have fared better in his reelection if Reagan hadn’t made a secret deal with the extremists in Iran to hang onto the hostages until after the election. Carter dealt with the legitimate government. Of course, the American public remained as clueless as ever, and sent a good noble man packing, and put an evil POS in office. Hmmm…I’m seeing a pattern here. Trump isn’t worthy to empty President Carter’s bedpans.
💯 truth.
Trump allowed 1.1 million Americans to die through his lack of competency and empathy. Carter led the fight to save three million people a year from the astounding pain and disfigurement caused by the Guinea worm. May he rest in peace, a truly great American.
Carter v Trump = Light v Darkness; = Grace v boorishness; true Chrisianity v Faux Xchristianity ……
As an aside, Carter’s “mandate” was 2.1%
Another small detail, is that Carter was still pounding nails when was 90.
