Great oaks from tiny acorns grow. And great blogs get there one click at a time. I am so pleased to share with you that today, March 6, 2023, this blog has been on the internet for five solid years.

If you are new here, I’ll share with you our history. We are all bloggers who initially published on Daily Kos. That’s where we met. We have six regular bloggers on this site, myself, Murf, Durrati, Jason, Michelle (whom I call Mopsy) and Mina. We also had Michael Tuck aka Black Max, publishing here until shortly before his death in 2021 from cancer. God rest his soul. Denis is our moderator and admin and he is worth his weight in gold. He also posts pieces from time to time.

I began reading DK in the spring of 2016. I was very ill. I had been mis-prescribed Xanax and I decided to detox from it, realizing it to be the poison that it is. Had I known then what I know now, about what the detox would entail, I would never have attempted it without a hospital program. It was brutal. My hearing became fuzzy, like my head was wrapped in layers of cotton swaddling. Noises affected me. The garbage truck coming at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning was like an invasion from space, between the flashing lights and the clanging of the truck. Everything was insanely exaggerated. Barking dogs and church bells in the distance drove me mad. I found myself hallucinating intermittently and it was only through dint of spiritual grounding and an act of will that I kept from calling 911 and checking into a hospital.

In this condition of mental and bodily anguish, it filtered through to my consciousness that Donald Trump was most likely going to get the GOP nomination. I began reading Murfster35 on DK. He was my guru. I became a Murfster groupie. Murfster laughs at this but it’s the truth. Half crazed, I read his daily work, (Murf was the King of the Rec or Wreck, take your pick, list back in those days. Today they call it the Trending list.) Then I went in and read his backlog of stories as I continued to recuperate.

Through them all, Murf had a theme, starting soon after Trump descended the escalator, which is that he was going to get the GOP nomination. Murf said he wasn’t psychic, he said it was plain arithmetic. So for six weeks or so in bed, I read everything Murf every wrote and pondered his words and I said to myself, “Oh my God, this guy is right.”

He was right.

I spent the summer glued to Daily Kos. I didn’t actually become a member there until fall of 2016 and I thought, of course, that Hillary would win. I posted a few articles on the cult of Trump, Steve Bannon breaking campaign finance laws, all that and then along came November 8 and you know what happened that night.

With a grim determination I decided that anything I could do to expose this fraud and the Trojan horse of subversives that entered the White House with him, I would. There began a life changing journey.

Come January of 2017 a website developer launched a blog called the Trump Impeachment, later changed to Daily Sound and Fury. I became aware that my work was being republished on that site, via a Creative Commons license, and didn’t think too much about it. At one point I had occasion to contact the developer to ask about a similarly named blog, Impeach Trump and in the course of our conversation I was asked if I wanted to be a featured writer on DSF and make a few dollars, and he literally meant a few dollars, by being a featured writer.

I said, “Hell, yes. I’m posting pieces anyhow, might as well make a few bob for doing it.” Then the other writers here followed me and in 2018 a new blog, PolitiZoom, consisting of only original content, no scraped articles from Daily Kos, came into being.

We were grass roots and folks, I mean grassroots. I mean that in the beginning we were lucky if we had 25 views on a piece, which is maybe 12 cents income, depending upon which quarter you’re in and how the ad revenues are shaking down.

The pennies grew into dollars, the dollars grew into tens, and then hundreds and then thousands of dollars. We are not a big site or a wealthy site, by no means. And there are incredible ups and downs, due to seasonal variations and the vagueries of the news cycle. But we are a growing site. That’s all that matters. We have grown phenomenally in our five years up at bat.

And that is due to you. We are nothing without our readers. As Ursula K. LeGuin put it, (I’m paraphrasing) “A story is like a circuit. It’s only black marks on wood pulp [or illuminated pixels] until the reader comes along and reads. The experience is communicated from one mind to another. Then the circuit is complete. ” The internet is a vast ocean and our posts are like messages in a bottle. Sometimes only a few people open the bottle, other times tens of thousands do.

We are the Little Political Blog That Could. We started out in the deep space of the internet and from there we have worked up enough speed to gain the recognition of some cultural and political luminaries. Posts on this site have been boosted on Twitter by Lincoln Project, Meidas Touch, Laurence Tribe, Jill Wine-Banks, Garry Kasparov, Richard Painter and others. We’ve been publicly trashed by the likes of Mike Lindell and Ric Grenell. Our posts have been reblogged by Bill Moyers, Alternet, and Crooks & Liars. Jimmy Kimmel talked about us in his monologue.

On a comical note, our sister site, Daily Sound and Fury, split off from us in late 2020 and has since gone under. If that sounds mean spirited, you would have to know the entire story. In a nutshell, the new DSF owners told me that they didn’t have to pay me, or my writers, anymore but that we were welcome to post for free and they would allow us the courtesy of a hot link (which is a tool to drive traffic.)

Right. We’re going to give away our work because we are widdle, toopid people and these guys were big powerful smart ones — who got these ideas reading articles on Google and hadn’t one day of practical experience either writing for or managing a political blog before they bought DSF.

When I was done laughing, I said, “You’re going to plummet like a rock in the search engines without breaking news and original content. PZ is the unique part of your blog. Without us, you are scraping stories off of Daily Kos, and putting ads on them, nothing more. We are the engine driving the DSF train and that’s been the case for two years.”

They didn’t believe me and so they plummeted like a rock. We went on to thrive.

The new owners were interested in money only, which is never the way to run a business, any business. You have to believe in your product or service, or those who do will run you out of the market. I told one of the new owners, “Every great cause starts out as a movement, turns into a business and eventually devolves into a racket. You, Sir, are about to take DSF into stage three.” That was considered abusive on my part at the time. The owner never spoke to me again and turned me over to his accountant. Two years later history has proven me right.

The moral of the story is stay close to the great cause. Never lose sight of your roots, what drew you to this work and how important this business is. We are in the vanguard in the fight to defend democracy. That is what brought us here and that is what keeps us here.

You’ve probably seen my posts on the anti-First Amendment madness in Florida, where the State Senate and Ron DeSantis seek to pass bills which would lower the bar for journalists to be sued and compel bloggers to register with the state and be tracked as subversives. This is the madhouse of politics in the year 2023 and it’s only going to get worse. The 2024 GOP primary is going to be a classic, all signs point to that inescapable eventuality. At the end of the day, we will either see a budding fascist, Ron DeSantis on the top of the Republican ticket, or the twice impeached former guy, who has announced he’ll keep running for president even under indictment.

On behalf of Murf, Durrati, Jason, Mopsy, Denis, Mina and our late friend Mike, we thank you from the bottom of our heart for having partnered with us in this great adventure. We will continue to bring you breaking news and commentary.

If you’re new here to PolitiZoom, come get on board. We are riding shotgun on Washington politics and we’re gaining ground and momentum every day.

Toot toot.

    • Thank you so much. It’s been a labor of love. And it will continue to be. As hard as it is to make a buck in this business, you have to love it. It’s like acting or music or a lot of creative fields. It’s not easy to make money but damn is it satisfying to have even a small amount of success at.

    • Thank you. The traffic waxes and wanes, like the moon. Not just here, on all the blogs and all the media outlets. So we try to save a few pennies when times are good to tide us over when times are not so good.

  1. How lovely to know that my younger daughter’s birthday is the same as this site!

Happy birthday to the site and all who write it!

  2. Good job everyone! I have been a fan of Murf since DSF and freaked out when he was suddenly gone. I was so happy to find him here right away and have been following from day 1.

    • I know how nasty I sound laughing at DSF but I swear to you, I did everything I could to reason with these people. They just don’t know this business. I guess that they thought this was “easy money” (HA!) and the irony there is that it could have been, had they been willing to negotiate. Of course we wanted more money, and that’s when they got nuts and said they didn’t have to pay us at all — according to some article they read. Good, let the article bring you traffic. I didn’t fight it at that point, I just bid fare thee well.

I’m elated that you followed our work over here.

    • Thank you, friend. It’s been a great ride so far and I look for that to continue. We have faced challenges. We’ve had good months and we’ve had horrible months. This is a see saw kind of a business. That’s something that you have to adjust to.

  3. Congratulations Ursula, et.al. Five years is an affirmation of the work you do and will keep on doing. I don’t write much here but I lurk daily. I followed DK for a few years before I saw the glimpses of a migration over to here and so I hopped on to see what was going to happen. My position is that if I’m going to spend 45 minutes to an hour reviewing blog posts I really want to see meat and potatoes, the heart of the issues we face daily. I get that here so thanks to all. At DK and some other sites, the chatter often meanders through unproductive or uninteresting threads. Someone may call a person worthy of our collective ire “as dumb as a toad” to which the response quickly became “don’t insult toads” and then spun out into nonsensical threads of that nature. I found it a waste of time. So again, thank you for the well stated and articulate commentary.

    • We have a small community, but a smart and solid one. We even had a pet right-wing troll for a while, but I had to ban him because he was so toxic.

    • I still check out DK once or twice a day but spend little time there anymore. Most of what I read is the stuff on the war in Ukraine, and I like to check in with the top comments for the picture quilt. But I don’t even comment over there much anymore since I read so few articles there. One weekly thing I make sure to check is ShowerCap on Friday nights (ten pm) because his twisted sense of humor and satire is my kind of stuff. I’d love to see him here! Or that I was clever enough to replicate what he does only here on PZ. Perhaps there’s someone out there in our viewership with the chops to do it…

  4. Keep typing! Ha. Time for a new piece on the Georgia legislature pushing bills to control the prosecutors! Republicans will be voting to remove prosecutors investigating them!!! Fascism has reached our shores. It passed the senate and house and fully expected to be law in a couple of weeks. Ms Willis will be the first on the chopping block to stop her from bringing charges. The lieutenant governor is a goddamn target as is Trump. Welcome to the fascist fun house. This is a classic fascist move. There are no prosecutors in Russia, Iran, North Korea, or Hungary, where the dictators have effectively dismantled the judiciary. Now add Georgia. In the USA. Damn it to hell.

    • Excellent suggestion. I will follow up on it.

You know you are always welcome to submit a piece, if you feel like writing one. A lot of “community” writers (meaning people who post once in a while for free) get on the front page with the rest of us.

  5. CONGRATULATIONS!
I am very proud of you. I know how hard your life can be at times. You have stuck by your convictions and made a difference in this world. DSF dug their own grave. You survived! Keep it up.

    • DSF is the Incredible Shrinking Blog. They just keep getting smaller and smaller. Nobody can tell them anything. I know a few people who have spoken to them about buying the blog and they want tons of money. Lots of luck getting that with no traffic.

    • Scott, no way. Your are one of the most articulate and impassioned people here. If you ever feel you want to write something, please let me know and we’ll make it happen.

      • Will do Ursula. Thanks for the complement. I truly worry for the children knowing how difficult life is in the best of circumstances. I realize I’m a shot of jack Daniel’s in a wine and cheese culture. Ha. There’s so much to my story I haven’t shared because sometimes what actually happens strains believability. As Allen Ginsberg once wrote in a poem, “America I’m putting my queer shoulder to the wheel.” In Allen’s case he was being literal. In my case, it rest on all the unique and dangerous things I’ve been through that makes me passionate for the truth. Keep up the good fight. Freedom needs people speaking truth to power.

    • I agree with Ursula. Sometimes your passion is criticized as going over-the-top but hey, the same can be said of me and I sometimes post actual articles. Ok, so sometimes I draft something and decide it wouldn’t be a good idea to post it but the point is that you are knowledgeable, articulate and care about things people who come here care about. I say by all means take a crack at writing some articles. And remember, it doesn’t have to be specific to the hot topic of a given day. Some of what I know you have stuff to say about AND where you have lived experience and expertise comes up on a regular basis. I got criticized on DK and sometimes here too for being too “in the weeds” in explaining things I actually know shit about but context matters. So think about some general stuff. You might also draft up a few things and save them to adapt to a specific piece of news that’s suddenly dominating things. Just my two cents.

Oh, and for others reading this the same advice holds. Our Community section never really got going. I think only a couple of us bothered but it would be nice to see people utilize it. And if someone has something really good I think we can move it over to the front page.

      • It looks like medical pot might actually become available here in NC. Sadly, even though the GOP seems to finally being open to it they are predictably demanding to severely limit the conditions for which it can be prescribed. So if approved I doubt my shrink will be able to give me a scrip. But for those who can get it, I say your idea for a way to celebrate five years of PZ is a great idea!

  6. Happy birthday and congratulations on your 5th year! I always sit down to coffee every morning with Politizoom and frequently post your articles on my Twitter account. Thank you for watching out for our country’s freedom!

    • Thank you, Roberta, for posting our work on your Twitter feed and boosting our signal. That’s how it works. It’s like the original term “broadcasting” which mean a farmer scattering seed. The seed got all over the place. You never knew how far the wind would take it, where it would grow. The internet is just like that.

  7. Thanks Denis. When I read your articles, it’s clear you know your stuff. The character jack reacher comes to mind. Ha. Speaking of experience, I just might relate a story at some point that happened to me in the late seventies that would explain some of my lack of tolerance for institutionalized hypocrisy. I’ve considered it before, but, since I offer no explanations or apologies, there would be definite reactions. I would speak for many however.

  8. My husband and I were reading you on DK and when this blog came up we followed you. Now I follow and support you on my own but I am sure with my husband’s blessings. Keep up the great work. I actually learn something new EVERYDAY I read the posts here. Thank you to ALL of you at PZ!

  9. I remember you and Mitigated from.Daily Kos. I blogged there from 2005 through 2015. We had a very sudden move and could afford WiFi for Avery long time. When I got back after 2017, I found the place unrecognizable. I was not impressed by the quality of the writing and found the current admins whiny and snotty and very young. Especially when they found out I was a,Boomer. It is very annoying to be preached at by a 25 year-old male who disagrees with your post despite said post being heavily and accurately researched, while offering no counterevidence other than “You’re old like my parents so you cannot possibly know anything.,”

    • FWIW I wrote as irishwitch. I had 250followers, never a,Big Name, but one of the older feminists and non-Christians. I.wrote about abortion, rape, sexual.harassment,, and the Religious Reich.
