Maya Angelou once gave us an immortal quote, its keen insight is almost impossible to refute. You know the one: “When someone shows you who they are, believe them… ” Yes, that is wise and to be held close. But be careful. The rest of the quote is often left out, “Believe them the first time... ” It thus circles a dangerous corner – we cannot always “believe them,” least of all Sen. Ted Cruz. Because most people are a constant attempt to prove themselves, get better – adapt, that’s fine. But when someone like Cruz tries an entirely new persona, go back to first impressions because we know better.

Ted is in the battle of his political life against Rep. Collin Allred. Yes, last time, Cruz ended up beating the indefatigable Beto O’Rourke. Cruz was up only two points in the polls and ended up beating Beto by the same two points. This time, 538 Polling has Cruz up in the composite by 3.3 percentage points but the polling also shows that the race is tightening. The highly respected Morning Consult Poll has Allred up 1.0 point over Cruz and the trends favor Allred. The last Morning Consult Poll over two months ago had Cruz up five percent. Cruz is feeling the heat in a tightening race. He must rebrand. He thinks.

One doesn’t have to follow politics to know that the Senate is bipartisan in its unique hatred of Ted Cruz. Moreover, the general public won’t be left behind and has the same assessment. Cruz was a convincing ass on his arrival, people absolutely believed he was an ass, few have stopped believing so, all because Ted’s case as an ass is so compelling. He has a very steep cliff to climb and thus the rebrand will be extremely difficult. In that sense, he is almost permanently stuck in the original Cruz, subsection 4-(G). And yet, according to Politico:

Sen. Ted Cruz, the famously sharp-elbowed Texan who was rated among the most hardline members of the Senate in his first and second terms, says that reputation is inaccurate — and he really wants voters to keep that in mind as he seeks another six years in Washington.

Interesting. Cruz immediately asserted that the assessment and hatred are “inaccurate” rather than say that he’s changed and thus re-assess him. Even though it’s true that we ought to believe people the first time, it is important to do so while also aware that life does evolve, maturation matters, things and people change. Ted doesn’t say that he’s moved, changed, that he’s learned, or he’s now more experienced, no – we are inaccurate in our assessment. Thanks, Ted. Sigh…

Onward, Politico?

So, out are government shutdowns — Cruz voted for the continuing resolution to keep the government open this week. In are bipartisan achievements like new, trade-promoting bridges across the Rio Grande; tax relief for hurricane victims; and the most recent FAA Reauthorization Act.

Oh, well – congratulations. You voted to keep the government open, that’s crafty. It’s also your job but never mind that. Bridges in your state over a river? You wily man, that’s not courage nor change. You vote to provide relief to others after your hometown was iced then baked, like a frozen pizza? Way to go. Oh, lest we forget – you want the airport running smoothly so your next flight to Cancun is timely. Fantastic, rebrand him.

No. He hasn’t changed, the only change is the calculus. Notice there is no immigration bill. Indeed, nothing that really stands out as bare knuckled moderation. He might be trying to reach a more center-like stance because Texas is becoming purple, per the report:

the GOP has seen its presidential margin of victory in Texas shrink from Mitt Romney’s 16-point win in 2012 to Donald Trump’s 6-point victory in 2020.

Additionally, the latest poll of any kind has the race at basically a toss-up:

Well, that is most certainly a rebrand but it says more about Texas than it does about… No, it actually does reflect Ted Cruz because the same poll has Donald Trump up five in Texas, a four point difference. The four points that remain upside down must be considered as not just “four points behind Trump.” They should also reflect a two term Senator from a red state who might otherwise be up 12 if he were not, well – Ted Cruz.

There is only one thing to believe: Ted Cruz has shown himself for what he is and there is little love lost, going out or in Democrat or GOP. To be told that his reputation is inaccurate is inane. So, continue to believe in Ted Cruz Classic. Maya Angelou would nod in approval.

P.S. This is simply a fantastic grease fire in the rebrand. FAIL

  1. He has pissed off every ally he had in the Senate so cannot get any bills he wants passed. Nobody can stand him. Hmmm,I wonder what turnover in his offices are.

  2. Liars lie…the arrogant Republicans count on the abject stupidity of the American voting Republic. Until proven otherwise…so far it has worked.

  3. Yeah, it’s a simple question: You’ve been in office for 11 years. What have you done for the people?

But he gets upset over that question, and won’t answer it.
