Two out of the four co-founders of the Lincoln Project are now gone, leaving George Conway and Rick Wilson — and Conway opined on Thursday that screenshots of messages between a former senior staffer and a reporter writing a story on Lincoln Project may have been illegal disclosures. This is all happening in wake of the resignation of John Weaver, one of the original four founders, over his scandal involving promises of advancement in exchange for sexual favors, which is under investigation. Axios:

Background: Schmidt’s resignation comes amid a wave of damaging stories for the Lincoln Project.

  • The New York Times reported last month on allegations from 21 men that Weaver sent them unsolicited and sexually charged messages. One was 14 years old at the time, according to the report.

  • Multiple people have reportedly been contacted by federal law enforcement regarding the alleged conduct. The Lincoln Project said it has hired an external law firm to conduct an investigation into the matter.

  • The AP reported that the majority of the $90 million that the Lincoln Project has raised was paid to consulting firms tied to the group’s founders and senior staff.

The donations issue may actually raise more of a stink than the sex scandal. As John McCain said, “this isn’t a nice business we’re in.”

  1. Welp…looks like the American conservative movement is going to be in that wilderness longer than I thought. You should absolutely check out Schmidt’s resignation letter. He had really personal reasons for walking away.

    • Nature of the business…my distant cousins, the Long brothers in Louisiana, could tell you that much. It’s why I tend to sneer so much at folks who think that high-minded ideals are enough in this game…or talk about how their fantasy version of how government is supposed to work (I’ve been doing that last one for about sixteen years now).

So much for the myth of the “Noble Republican with a conscience”……..

I guess you can take the Republican out of the grift, but you can’t take the grift out of the Republican. ? ? ?

    • I’d certainly like to know more about this op with the above in mind, Blue. But I also have to leave open the possibility that this is a hit job by the GQP. My opinion of the latter’s lack of competence remains unchanged but so does my opinion of their vicious habit of pressing the advantage.

  3. I guess they should have learned from the master, i.e., “grab them by the pussy” don juan. Then u don’t have to resign, u can b president, kill 500k americans, & lead an armed insurrection & WALK. Maybe next time they will get it right.
