Friday night firings are standard in Trump world, although this one sent some sparks flying. Bill Barr announced that U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman was leaving his post at SDNY and Barr proposed Jay Clayton as a replacement. What is intriguing here is that Clayton defended Deutsche Bank in the Russian money laundering scandal and Trump is very much in debt to Deutsche Bank. That was the story for a few hours, but then Geoffrey Berman issued this statement.

Well, we know Bill Barr is a liar, which is like getting confirmation of the fact that the sun rises in the east. This moved so freaking fast. Jerry Nadler just tweeted that Berman is coming to testify before the House Wednesday. This is supersonic, the way this story is moving.
This has already knocked Trump-O’s Klan-A-Palooza rally out of the lead story on al of the majors…..I’d imagine he’s on the floor throwing a bigly hissy fit right now.

Decided to check in before trying to get some sleep after what’s been an awfully depressing evening of news. I grew sick my heart as well as my gut watching Maddow and what’s happening with VOA and the other radio networks. The closing news she broke was about this matter. I’m not kidding when I say I felt sick inside.
Now? THIS is something that gives me some hope. Barr just might have stepped in a giant mixture of tar and shit. If Berman refuses to step aside and instead allow current investigations to proceed the fireworks that will ensue this weekend will be epic. If Barr/Trump can’t actually fire him except for cause then if they try he can challenge it in court and tie this shit up “bigly” and create a “Yuge” embarrassment for Trump. Better still, if Barr has a face covered in shit and can’t get done what Trump has ordered him to do might Trump have a hissy fit and ask for BARR’s resignation? And if so might Barr say “fuck it” and walk? This could after all be his ticket to get out of dodge and provide some distance between his misdeeds and the legal proceedings sure to follow the end of Trump’s Presidency – and maybe allow him to cut some kind of deal to avoid prosecution.
I might actually get some sleep tonight after all, fill with dreams of a major implosion in Trump World.
Denise, of all tRump’s sycophants (not to be confused with psycho-pants), I think Barr is one who has always been corrupt and willingly supports tRump without being held captive by the Orange Buffoon because of some egregious previous conduct. I don’t think Barr’s going to leave voluntarily at any point. Now tRump may try to fire him but…. “We’ll see,” as tRump likes to say.
Himself can legally fire Berman – but Barr can’t, because it’s a position that requires Senate confirmation.
WTF Barr is doing is what he’s always done, which is whatever the ‘hail’ he wants! Which is to ignore the rule of law or decency and get away with it scot-free.

IANAL, and I can’t remember where I saw this, but I did read that, under the terms of Berman’s appointment, he cannot be removed from it unless and until there is a Senate confirmed replacement. I think Barr thought he could bully him into “stepping down” anyway and was mist unpleasantly surprised. Further, apparently, of all people, Lindsey Graham is making noise about not doing a fast confirmation (if at all) of the proposed replacement.
