Shock Talk! Harris Spokesperson Suggests Biden Step Down to Leave Harris as President

Jamal Simmons, former communications director for Vice President Kamala Harris, made a stunningly stupid and yet never the less shocking statement on CNN this morning. Simmons says that President Joe Biden should step down for the remainder of the term, leaving Harris in office until January 20th 2025. This is so dangerous on so many levels that even voicing the idea was reckless and should be punished.

But let’s first get to her quote before going over why this is not tolerable. Per Mediaite, Simmons said:

“Joe Biden’s been a phenomenal president, he’s lived up to so many of the promises he’s made. There’s one promise left that he could fulfill, being a transitional figure. He could resign the presidency in the next 30 days, make Kamala Harris president of the United States — ”

At which point, Dana Bash and the rest of the panel picked their jaws up off the floor, only to yell, “Whoa!” and “Wow.” To which, I will add a “Wow, are you stupid?” and “Please to be fcking off now.” Yes, because Simmons went on to say:

“It would absolve her from having to oversee the January 6th transition, right, of her own defeat. And it would make sure, it would dominate the news, at a point where Democrats have to learn, drama and transparency and doing things the public want to see — this is the time, this is the moment for us to change the entire perspective of how Democrats operate.

From a fact-free position of idiocy? Democrats should operate from a pyromaniac’s perspective? Democrats should prove that they can take the country’s internal temperature up even further? Simmons just demonstrated that he shouldn’t be trusted as a Democratic spokesperson any time soon. This suggestion is dangerous. The idea is ridiculous. The motivation is reckless.

Let’s be clear about this to wrap up any confusion. The voters accepted voted in Joe Biden and then thoroughly – without any equivocation or doubt whatsoever, rejected Kamala Harris and her campaign. Harris, for all the later reasons we later find true, is in the John Kerry column. She and Kerry are the only two Democrats since 1992 who lost the popular vote! Why on earth would Democrats override a big majority of Americans? Why would we want to!

Kamala Harris is perfectly capable of overseeing her own retirement as Vice President on January 6th. She knew the deal coming in. No one is worried about her feelings, she is plenty strong enough to care for herself. And even if she was not, that would actually be a reason to not install her as president!!

Such a move would do nothing more than antagonize Republicans and spit in their face in front of the world. It would be a bad idea – why would we even want to do that to fellow Americans?

It would be perhaps the single biggest as sore loser, whiny, pout in all of history. It is also dangerously, sickeningly and outrageously provocative. People are worried about Donald Trump’s authoritarian instincts and yet Simmons wants Biden to install the clear loser of the election? Come on.

The country is in a weird spot. We have a new dynamic. I cannot think of a recent period in which a single party had such total control of all three branches of government. Obama had all three political branches but didn’t have a liberal SCOTUS. Trump has it all. People are worried that Trump and his supporters will install a dictatorship – as promised for “one day” by Trump – and that Trump will begin by avenging his enemies. It is possible that such sweeping control will instead have Trump focusing on implementing his own policies, fast – almost in an afterglow, not feeling the need to punish anyone given the extent of his victory. Perhaps the country will go through a small bit of unity.

The size of Trump’s victory truly does negate a lot of need to find retribution or revange anything. He need not prove his bona fides, no one is challenging the legitimacy of anything. Why do the single biggest, stupidest, most fleeting act possible? Biden is doing the right thing and instead inviting Trump to the White House, not Harris. The unity thing is hanging out there.

It could happen.

But it won’t happen if Democrats do something so reckless. Would Republicans see it as a challenge? “Try and unseat her! She lives in the White House! .. ” That she is president until someone forces her out? If so, I would be on the side trying to force her out. We cannot have a democracy only when we win and democracy needs as many advocates as it can get right now.

There is one last consideration. Joe Biden is much slower than he was as a young man and the debate proved that he couldn’t be president for an entire second term. But there are rumors – without any factual basis- that he is incapable of leading the country until January 20th. If Democrats forced Biden to resign in the face of this defeat, it would look as though they hid the fact that Biden was not fit for office. It would be a black stain on his legacy. Even most Republicans will admit that Biden’s five decades of service deserves a farewell on his own terms.

Thinking on it. If some in the Harris camp believe that Biden should step down, they should have asked in June when he decided to not run again. It would have allowed Harris to run as the incumbent and try out some of her own policies on which to run.

Too late. It is not going to happen. Unless Harris wins the nomination and runs again in 2028, she is not going to be president of the United States. Right now, Democrats should be focusing on working with some moderate Republicans on curbing the most extreme ideas on the Republican side. And that is all. Republicans have historic power at their disposal next year. It is not a time for Democrats to be thinking about anything but working alongside moderates and researching what happened and how to respond.

This is not only silly. It is dangerous. Harris shouldn’t be the only one soon looking for a job. Simmons – you are fired. Don’t do this again.
