This has been like watching a ping pong game. Rudy Giuliani told ABC News he was going to represent Trump and now Monday he says he isn’t. What a shame. it was going to be great comedy to hear “the Giuliani defense” as Karl Rove put it, which in a nutshell is that there could not have been incitement to riot, because all of the charges of widespread voting corruption are true — true in Rudy’s *mind* but not in the minds of any of the judges who threw the cases into the circular file and called them “meritless.” Nevertheless, the Giuliani defense isn’t flying, even with Donald Trump, apparently. New York Times:

Mr. Trump met with Mr. Giuliani on Saturday night at the White House, and the next day the president began telling people that Mr. Giuliani was not going to be part of the team. It is unclear who will be a defense lawyer for Mr. Trump, given that many attorneys have privately said they won’t represent him. […]

Yet a day earlier, Mr. Giuliani told ABC News that he would in fact be involved in the impeachment defense, and left open the possibility of Mr. Trump showing up for the trial. That interview infuriated Trump advisers and was a bridge too far for the president himself, according to the person close to the president, who described personal conversations on condition of anonymity.

While the president has a decades-long relationship with Mr. Giuliani, Mr. Trump’s advisers blame him for the events surrounding both of the impeachments that the president has faced.

Ivanka should give Daddy a gift, namely an embroidered sampler with the words of former ambassador to the EU Gordon Sondland, who said, “Every time Rudy gets involved with something he goes and fucks it all up.”

Rudy says

“Due to the fact that I may be a witness, the rules of legal ethics would prohibit me from representing the President as trial counsel in the impeachment trial,” Giuliani said in a statement to The Hill.

I don’t think there’s any “may be” about it. Rudy gave a speech, advocated “trial by combat” quintupled down on his absurd allegations of widespread voter fraud and a few hours later three people were dead, two more were in critical condition who subsequently died, and numerous persons were injured and/or arrested. While the prosecution certainly has not submitted a witness list because it’s nowhere near time for that, I don’t think it’s too much to speculate that Rudy is indeed a material witness to the incitement of riot and he will be called by the prosecution to testify. How could he not be?

Say…anybody seen Jenna Ellis, lately? Her name hasn’t come up at all with respect to the august Trump defense team. I was just wondering if she was going to make the leap from traffic court to a congressional trial, a trial for the ages as it were. We also hear crickets from Sidney Powell or Lin Wood. So what’s up with Strikeforce Rudy, any ideas?

Look for Impeachment II to be a wild scene. It’s the last time the Republicans have to do a mea culpa and regain credibility — or Trump’s grip will be even more firmly around their throats. Talk about a rock and a hard place. But they put themselves there.

    • Credibility being defined as moving away from Trump and back to the old GOP conservative line, the party of Romney and McCain. Or, they can all go down with orange anvils around their necks, their choice.

  1. If it doesn’t go to the Senate until after Joe is sworn in, they don’t need a full trial. They can send it to a special committee for investigation, and the committee would send their recommendation to the floor for a vote.
