Today is a good day for America, a great day for the Kamala Harris’ campaign, an especially good day for WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan… and so it must necessarily be a lousy day for Trump. After months of loud mouthing and bragging that he alone could bring the two American political prisoners home from their cells in Moscow, Trump woke up this morning (if he has indeed woken up) to news that the two men who have spent months – or in Whelan’s case 5 1/2 years in captivity – are now on their way home thanks to Joe Biden’s diplomacy:
“Russia freed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan in an exchange with the US, Bloomberg reported Thursday.
Bloomberg cited people familiar with the situation who asked for anonymity to discuss matters that have yet to be made public.
Gershkovich and Whelan were on their way to undisclosed locations outside Russia, per the outlet.
The US and its allies will send unnamed Russian captives that they are holding back to their country of origin.
Speculation around a potential prisoner swap intensified in recent days as several imprisoned dissidents were moved from their various penal colonies this week, including Vladimir Kara-Murza, a Russian journalist serving 25 years in Russia for criticizing the war in Ukraine.“
Evan Gershkovich was detained in March of last year, charged with espionage and sentenced to 16 years in prison, but Paul Whelan has been held since December of 2018… in the middle of Trump’s (R)esidency. Even though that was the case, Trump has tried to use both of their detentions as a political bludgeon against Biden, claiming that due to his cozy relationship with dictator Putin only he could secure their release… if only he could be elected.
Here he is earlier this year, trying desperately to ensure the two were held in Russia until after the election…
