December means many things to furkids. In the north, it means chilly weather while those in the south are coping with heat and humidity. But whichever hemisphere they’re in, they know it’s Catmas time, which means feasting, present-giving, and singing!
It also means the Furkids are busily working on their Catmas Speshal – the Twelve Days of Catmas – which begins this Friday the 13th and posts every day up to Catmas Eve.
For today’s post, they asked me for the heart-wrenching aria about the puppy who wants a kitty for Catmas. I couldn’t for the life of me think of any opera that featured puppies or kitties. But they insisted there was… “You know, the Dear Papa one by Giacomo Pussini.” Oh right, yes, that one.
Needless to say, their lyrics differ somewhat from Puccini’s original but I have to agree that their version fits in nicely with Catmas.
On the jukebox, American soprano Renée Fleming sings O Mio Babbino Caro accompanied by the Berliner Philharmonika, conducted by Ion Marin. Just press play, then scroll down through the illustrated lyrics and sing along in your best opera voice!

Yes, this is a political site, and yes, the Furkids are (mostly) not political (though sometimes they are very political). When I was offered this writing gig with PolitiZoom, it was a condition of my employment to bring my pet column with me. It started out in the Pet Community at Daily Kos in 2016 then became The Furkids here at PolitiZoom when I started here in 2021.
The Furkids are the site’s political palate cleanser, a moment’s respite from the frenetic pace of US politics. They strive to lift spirits and inspire when times are tough, and bring laughter to brighten up the weekend.
The kofi site is international. It accepts 3 in US, Australian, Canadian, New Zealand, British and European currencies, wherever in the world the Furkids’ followers happen to be. The funds go towards Loula’s healthcare. She is my furbaby, my inspiration and beloved companion.
