I have never been to Nashville but would love to go. The music history, the food…  However, despite never having been there, I am relatively sure that the large city has more than one major avenue or thoroughfare. Indeed, I would bet that they have a LOT of major streets downtown or parkways that haven’t been dedicated to someone. So it would seem like a big signal and symbol – and a big FU – that Tennessee STATE GOP pols would vote to rename part of “John Lewis way” to “President Donald Trump Blvd.”

During Black History Month.

This is back to the 50s all over again, and though we have countless brave progressives that are on the frontlines fighting for equality every day, we don’t have an MLK on the horizon, one that can get a million people on the Mall.

In many areas, we’re going backward. This is outrageous. They’re not even hiding it. In fact, the entire point is to do it right out in the open. From Huffington Post:

Republican-backed bill seeks to rename part of a Tennessee street dedicated to Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), the late civil rights leader, in order to “honor” former President Donald Trump.

The bill, sponsored by Tennessee state Rep. Paul Sherrell (R) and state Sen. Frank Niceley (R), would rename a portion of Nashville’s Fifth Avenue that had been named after Lewis. The section is between James Robertson Parkway and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard

Below we have the actual map of the area to be renamed.

The legislation, which calls for the stretch to be called President Donald Trump Boulevard, comes less than three years after Trump insisted that he hardly knew who Lewis was and that he couldn’t say “one way or the other” if he found him impressive.

Kind of like how Trump couldn’t say “one way or another” about David Duke’s endorsement.

It is made all the worse by the fact that Lewis’ lunch counter sit-ins occurred along Fifth Avenue during the civil rights movement, The Tennessean noted, and Nashville’s Metro Council renamed part of the street to recognize him following his death in 2020. And they would likely do it again. It’s a big city. Diversity and all. But the Tennessee State Legislature? That’s where gerrymandering comes in handy.

And worst of all, this was John Lewis, nearly giving up his life for the vote:

Meanwhile, this was Donald J. Trump at the time, fighting his own civil war against education of any type.

The state of Tennessee should be ashamed of itself but, then again, that’s the point. They did it for two reasons. First, to piss off liberals and those who want the civil rights movement to continue. And Second, most importantly, because they can, and they want everyone – especially Black Americans in Nashville – to be real sure of that fact.

  1. This display of virulent racism is probably just the beginning. These “God Fearing” (never understood why if one follows God’s guidance a person should fear God) people who tout how super “Christian” they are basically are making it clear that they have every intention of making goddamned sure that n*****s and other non-white, non-Protestant people are put back in their place. All the way back to three-fifths of a person status! Oh, they will hotly deny they’ve got a racist bone in their body, and point out “I’ve got a black friend” and so on but they are racist down to their defective DNA. And ANY conservative who doesn’t loudly condemn this shit (and other stuff like it) is a goddamned fucking racist too. That will bug conservatives who hang out here. And I say if you don’t flat-out and CLEARLY condemn it you are racist too. If you don’t like being called racist then at least don’t act like one! And if you want to call me names or object that I’m being unfair to you and other racists I say this:

    FUCK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Hey, I’m not saying others should destroy public property, but if they do change it, and unknown citizens should happen to keep tearing the sign off the post…whadda gonna do? By the way, tie dye skits seem to have the kinda dye that permeates concrete. I sure hope no one goes around copying Rihanna’s artwork on the sidewalks in technicolor. It would cost a fortune to jack hammer up those squares. We can’t have lawbreakers running amok.

  3. I was born & raised in Tennessee , although I don’t live there anymore this sickens me to think they would actually name a street after Trump !
