Talk about a “sick” burn! NH Gov. Chris Sununu has just body slammed Trump’s ego. Allow me to set the stage.

No one understands why Trump has been wasting time in Iowa. The GOP side of the caucuses are dominated by Evangelicals and long ago it was clear DeSantis was going to lose Iowa to Trump. Bigly so to speak. However as you know right afterwards comes New Hampshire. Trump had a large lead there too, or did until fairly recently. Trump of course wanted to come out with a huge win there too, and with SC next crush any chance of their former Gov. Nikki Haley pulling a surprise and if not winning at least making Trump sweat out primary night. So from Trump’s perspective, crushing both DeSantis and Haley in the first three contests would effectively make him the nominee. Oh, he’d still go to primary states and get his “fix” from adoring MAGA goobers worshiping him at his rallies, but even with Chris Christie (who like DeSantis putting all his chips in the Iowa basket has done the same in NH) out there needling him Trump would have the spotlight on him almost all the time.

However to borrow a phrase a “Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum Nomination.” As the DeSantis campaign was imploding sane GOP people including mega donors started looking to Nikki Haley. She’s picked up endorsements and money and as DeSantis’ polling numbers have cratered hers have risen. Speaking of endorsements, Haley has been enthusiastically endorsed by New Hampshire’s Governor Chris Sununu. This as you can imagine greatly displeased Trump. More so than Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds endorsing DeSantis. Ole Ronnie boy wasn’t helped a bit with the Gov. of that state endorsing him and continuing to do so. New Hampshire however has been another matter. Trump of course has posted nasty grams on his little watched Truth Social that barely have caused a blip in news cycles.

Things have changed however and quite dramatically. Recent polling shows Haley now polling within the margin of error in NH. Sununu’s endorsement of Haley can be seen to have made an impact.  To no one’s surprise Trump has freaked the hell out about it. Mediaite has a fun article about it all. If you use the link you can see the actual post of Trump’s, but the text of his all caps rant this past Friday is:

“FAKE NEW HAMPSHIRE POLL WAS RELEASED ON BIRDBRAIN. JUST ANOTHER SCAM! RATINGS CHALLENGED FOXNEWS WILL PLAY IT TO THE HILT. SUNUNU NOW ONE OF THE LEAST POPULAR GOVERNORS IN U.S. REAL POLL TO FOLLOW,”

No doubt a big part of Trump’s meltdown was that Fox News had coverage about the poll in question. FYI it has Trump at 33% and Haley at 29%. Why it matters, and especially Fox covering it is Trump knows his MAGAs and he knows his TV. That is NOT the kind of thing he wants the goobers that live in MAGA Land and who mostly get their news from Fox to be exposed to! Hence the name calling and making up crap such as Sununu being “unpopular.” In the real world, Chris Sununu ranks near the top when it comes to approval ratings of Governors. If Trump actually loses to Haley in NH, or even if she’s within five points (or worse for Trump less) then it’s a new ball game. She could do the same in SC. Trump would still be in the driver’s seat but he’d actually have to contend with someone else having gotten their hand on the steering wheel. And maybe wresting control of it from him.

All that remains to be seen. For the moment, a not the least bit intimidated Chris Sununu is making like another Chris (Christie) and directly take shots at Trump and in response to Trump’s all-caps meltdown kicked the crotch of Trump’s ego:

“One of us has never lost an election,” Sununu wrote on X/Twitter in response to Trump.

“The other currently polls at 40% in NH and apparently doesn’t know how to turn his caps lock off,” Sununu added referring to Trump’s low approval rating in the state. He concluded with the hashtag: #WhyAreYouSoObsessedWithMe.

For good measure, the proverbial knee to the face of the doubled over in pain from the crotch kick to Trump Sununu helpfully added something else.  His tweet included the rankings showing him as the fourth most popular Gov. in the country!  Hope you have plenty of popcorn on hand between now and the NH primary. I’m pretty sure this isn’t the last “exchange” between these two. If I’m right it will be entertaining as hell so keep an eye out. There might be enough post holiday entertainment from this political food fight to banish the usual post holidays doldrums.

Stay tuned. This could be fun!

  1. I remember John Sununu, Chris’ father. I can tell you no two personalities could be more different. I’m willing to give some credit on personality, if not politics. It’s sad there are fewer Republicans (or anybody of differing opinion) we could knock back a couple of cold ones and debate civilly. We could even argue, but one would always step back and draw the line. This is personally sad as one of my friends jabbed me about Clinton back in the day. But I could always pull a classic “W” abd have a laugh with him. Can we bring that America back?
