If you go chasing rabbits, and you know you’re going to fall, better make sure that the hole you go down is not to MAGAland, because nobody comes back from there. You might make it out of Wonderland, because with the exception of the Red Queen, nobody is particularly homicidal. But you have no chance to survive MAGAland in one piece. This is a precept which has been proven time and time again.

The world’s richest man, who is not used to not getting his own way, went into cahoots with Donald Trump a few years back, thinking that this was his ticket to ride. His rockets would be built by the government, and Musk and the equally dystopian Peter Thiel could rebuild the country into a serfdom, where they were the tribal overlords and everybody worked for them. Great plan. The only problem is that they had to deal with Donald and that always leads to ruination. So Musk is going to huff and puff and use Twit/X to blow everything down.

Elon Musk is aiming his ire, and massive online following, at House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune.

Why it matters: In private, Musk failed to save the electric vehicle tax credit from being axed by the Trump budget bill, our colleague Marc Caputo scooped earlier today. Now he’s trying to nuke the entire bill.

  • In the process, Musk is giving fodder for Democratic ad-makers next fall.
  • Congress is making America bankrupt,” he posted after calling the House-passed budget bill a “disgusting abomination.”

💪 This is a big test of Musk’s real political power, especially when so much of his influence over the past six months has flowed from his tight relationship with President Trump.

  • ☹️ “My friend Elon is terribly wrong,” Johnson told reporters after Musk’s posts today.
  • “I know that the EV mandate — very important to him. That is going away, because the government should not be subsidizing these things as part of the Green New Deal. And I know that has an effect on his business. And I lament that,” Johnson said.
  • Thune said he hopes Musk will keep reading the bill and “come to a different conclusion.”

📲 Zoom in: Musk blasted out his post while Republican senators were gathered for their weekly lunch.

  • Phones were passed around and the post was discussed toward the end of the meeting, attendees told us.
  • “We obviously respect everything Elon did on DOGE. On this we just have a difference of opinion,” Thune said.
  • Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) told us he understands Musk’s frustration with the spending levels, adding he hopes the Senate version of the bill will have more spending cuts.

The intrigue: Musk’s outburst came the same day that the White House sent its rescissions package to Congress, which will allow Congress to codify many of the cuts identified by Musk’s DOGE.

  • Johnson told reporters he will “move it as quickly as our rules allow us,” setting up a possible floor vote next week for Congress to cut funding to NPR, PBS and USAID.

Do you love this imagery of Republicans in Congress passing phones around while they try not to soil themselves standing there, as they read of Musk’s wrath? This is some serious business here. Very serious business. Musk may have devolved Twit/X into a shadow of its former self, but the wreckage that is left is right-wing tilted. So Musk has the ears of the very people he wants to have, all shades of the MAGA-Republican spectrum.

And Musk is livid. That much is clear. He got into this deal with Trump believing that he was bullet proof and he could get whatever he wanted. It has not worked out that way. Trump has endeavored to soften the blow and say Musk isn’t really gone and that part appears to be true. But look at the situation here: Musk is still on the political scene but he’s in opposition to the GOP. Look at his words:

This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”

Minutes later he went further, with a clear threat against Republican lawmakers’ political careers.

“In November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people,” wrote Musk.

You can’t be clearer than that. Vote for this bill, get primaried. Next. No wonder they’re passing the phones around. Next they’ll be passing around tranquilizers. Or booze, Or both. Musk believes himself to be a force to be reckoned with. The problem here is that the Republicans thought Musk would be allied with them and against the Democrats. Now, to all intents and appearances, it looks like Musk might be handing some seats to Democrats.

Musk is a wild card and that chainsaw he used to wield when reportedly high on Ketamine might be directed against his former allies. And there’s a good chance of that. For you see, Trump provided Elon with a much greater drug than Ketamine. He provided Elon with the drug of attention. Musk loved being in the limelight. He’s out of the limelight now and he’s jonesing. So what better way to get back in the limelight? Switch sides.

We could be watching that very thing. Maybe we should send copies of different movie versions of Frankenstein to GOPers in Congress, ya spose? Maybe then they’ll get it. Their monster is out of control. And their monster’s monsters as well. The way things are going for the Republicans, it’s zombie apocalypse time.

  2. I’m hoping musk will spill the tea on the trump White House. I’m sure he saw some juicy, gross things in trump’s little circle.

Plus he might have inside info that would be useful. Someone just has to goad him into spilling it.

I’m not siding with the guy, he might have some secrets about our glorious bleater-in-chief to enlighten the nation

  3. Musk exemplifies how deeply our “elected” officials in Washington DC are bought and paid for and how stupid anyone who hitches a ride on the trumptrain is. Unfortunately, the rest of us are dragged along for the worst ride of our lives.
