Mitch McConnell got back from the hospital after suffering a fall at his home in Louisville, Kentucky, Sunday. Normally, this would not be a cause for anything more than a sympathy card, but for the fact that 30 Americans died this weekend in two gun bloodbaths, and Democrats were eager to cancel the August Senate recess and get gun control legislation passed. Axios:

The big picture: The injury comes as a number of Democrats and some Republicans have called upon McConnell to cancel the Senate’s August recess so that lawmakers can pass gun control legislation in the aftermath of two deadly mass shootings this weekend. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi demanded on Sunday that Senate Republicans put an end to to their “outrageous obstruction,” referencing McConnell’s refusal to bring two background check bills passed in the House this year for a vote on the Senate floor.

Here’s Pelosi’s full statement:

“In less than 24 hours, another American community has been devastated by the tragedy of gun violence. The hearts of all Americans break for the families and friends of those injured and murdered, and our prayers go out to everyone impacted in this latest act of terror. We give thanks for the brave first responders, who rushed into harm’s way to save lives and ensured that everyone received the care and support they needed.

“We cannot allow another family or another community to suffer the pain and anguish of gun violence. We have a responsibility to the people we serve to act. The Republican Senate must stop their outrageous obstruction and join the House to put an end to the horror and bloodshed that gun violence inflicts every day in America. Enough is enough.

“May it be a comfort to the entire Dayton community that so many Americans grieve with and pray for them at this terrible time.”

With all due respect to McConnell, maybe somebody else could handle the matter and business as usual can proceed. Pelosi is right about taking immediate action before more lives are lost.

    • It’s hard to have sympathy. I try to be a civilized person. I didn’t say anything rude when Rand Paul got his butt kicked by his neighbor. But after a while, the most decent amongst us are going to get fed up.

      • Given how the Stones’ “Midnight Rambler” goes through my head whenever I REALLY think about what they’ve done, I’m less and less sure I was ever as decent as I thought I was.

  1. Karma, if you believe in it for MM. He may believe he’ll get through this life unscathed because he’s the almighty MM, but he won’t.

    • Oh, the best part is coming for Moscow Mitch. In a few more years, he’ll be dead and gone and everything he ever spent his political career defending dies with him. I once heard it said that long life for such creatures is the true Curse of Cain, living long enough to watch the world you knew fade away.

  2. Yeeeaaahhh, I’m gonna need to see an actual statement of injury from the hospital proving he’s actually hurt instead of just hiding out at home like the coward he is.

    • If he would be faking something like that, it would really be horrendous. Not that I would be surprised. Nothing surprises me any more. If a flying saucer landed on the White House lawn and Gort and Klaatu got out and said, “You guys blew it and we’re taking over now,” it would not surprise me.

      • McConnell is a snake. I don’t think there is anything he wouldn’t do to ram his twisted plans down the Country’s throat. This is just too convenient by far for my peace of mind.

        • Even so, Batch, do be careful not to fall down Alice’s rabbit hole here. Nothing wrong with skepticism but paranoia in a situation like this is useless. Seeing danger everywhere is as ineffective as seeing it nowhere. Plus, an injury like that, especially a man his age, will take MONTHS to recover from.

  3. I understand Moscow just had a large fire in an industrial area building, he could set up a cot in there, hang a bunch of army blankets around his cot to brake the freaking cold drafts, OR his wife could buy the place fix it up and paint the inside and outside with pink paint and hang a large sign on the building, “Moscow Mitch, best Russian agent in years !!”,.

    • I’m used to the news getting weird, but two stories really blow my mind. One is this one about McConnell, and one is Durrati’s about Mexico seeking extradition of the El Paso shooter. Wow on both.

    • What, Russia doesn’t have enough fires going with their Siberian wilderness blazes? Seriously, though, all their fires reflect a nation that is anything but on the rise. To paraphrase a Russian official, when Putin goes, Russia goes.

  4. Take a close look at that beautiful gun in MM’s hand in the top picture, hand made of steel, polished brass and smooth finished Walnut … and here is the best part, you get ONE shot, as the piece of flint in the clamp of the firing mechanism, scrapes across the steel, flings sparks into a little groove full of black powder, that passes the ensuing flash into the black powder packed into the back end of the barrel. behind the patched and rammed in ball of lead about 1/2″ in diameter, even with spiral grooves on the inside of the barrel, the accuracy of the shot is not always guaranteed, and the ball floats along at a very reduced speed, compared to the rapid powerful bullet of the AR-15, and the momentum of the ball falls off sharply as it goes about 50-60 yards ….

Then, to prevent a miss-fire due to possible lingering hot powder ash igniting the load of fresh powder you are pouring down the barrel, a damp swab should be run down the barrel with the ramrod you see peeking out of the front end of the gun, then that would be followed by a dry swab or patch to pull out any dampness left there …

Finally, a little brass tube that holds about 50-60 grams of black powder dumped out of your powder flask, is poured down the inside of the barrel, followed by another lead ball wrapped in a patch cloth soaked with a wax-like lubricant, started into the end of the barrel with a little ball-starter with a wooden ball for your palm … then the ramrod with a turned brass point pushes the patched ball tight against that load of powder, if not tight enough the barrel could blow up … with the gun upright and the flint lock mechanism clicked open a little amount of powder is placed into that little groove, and the flint holder is carefully let down to cap that groove and contain the power there, now you are ready to fire again, pull the gun up to your sight window, click back the flintlock into ready position, pull the trigger …

The best shooters of this system can reload, using special loader tubes in about 20-30 seconds ignoring the possibility of hot ash ignition in the barrel …

In that same time an AR-15 could easily kill 20-30 people or more in a crowded school, stadium, or mall ….

That’s what is so sickening of these bozos holding up one of these beautiful old style black powder guns, and talking like that gun would be lost to people by regulations against the AR-15/AK-47 types of man-killing weapons …
