I wonder if Eddie Murphy has a moment? Maybe he could come and mimic Mike Johnson mimicking a Black man for us. Or just mimic Moses Mikey, period. I would find that very entertaining. Johnson is with his wife on Katie Miller’s podcast reminiscing about meeting a 102-year-old Black man with the secret to a successful marriage. And without the Jim Crow affectation the story would have been a decent one.

This is called “code switching” and since Johnson does it effortlessly we can only assume that he’s quite comfortable doing it. I seriously doubt if he does it around Hakeem Jeffries, however.

In all fairness, there are a lot of people in this thread who are defending Johnson for doing a “Louisiana” accent. Yes, that can be argued. But he’s doing a Black man’s accent, a rural Black man’s accent by his own admission. And good for this guy if he can afford to buy a new car every three years. That’s outstanding for anybody, anywhere.

All things considered, the story would have been better off without the Black patois. It’s code switching and it’s Mikey showing he can “sound just like them, hahahahahaha!” I’m sure he’s entertained a number of his colleagues at the frat house, the state house, wherever with his mimicry of a Black man. As stated, let’s see some Black comedian do a Mike Johnson. That I will find very entertaining. Chris Rock, maybe? He can do a honky faux Xian any day of the week, I’m certain of it.

  1. No matter what “Vengeance Come Quickly” and “sheiy” might think, Johnson IS already “Southern” so there wasn’t any need for him to “affect” a “Southern” or “rural Louisiana” accent to tell the story.

Now, if someone wanted to try defending him by saying he was trying to affect an “old guy” accent (or, more accurately, style), maybe (think of “Grandpa” Abe Simpson compared to Homer–both voiced by Dan Castellaneta; Abe’s voice tends to have a raspier sound with a slight quiver to it, not too unlike what Johnson was doing). I really don’t understand, though, why HE was presenting this “award” instead of the governor (he mentions the Governor gave *him* the certificate to hand out which doesn’t make much sense). And, some things don’t really add up about it beyond the “new car” thing. Johnson says the guy and his wife lived in a “small house” but there were “forty people there.” (Oh, and the “shiny new Cadillac.” Isn’t it amazing that Black folks *always* seem to have Cadillacs in these stories told by white right-wingers?) The clip doesn’t really seem to have made clear if the couple knew they were getting this recognition ahead of time and that’s why they just happened to have “forty people” at the “small house” when Johnson and the “little woman” came along. But, even then, that many people in a “small house” just defies comprehension.
