Last week’s assassination of a Minnesota legislator and her husband was tragic enough but now that tragedy is being compounded by blatant lies about the political leanings of the suspect in custody. The rationale is simple: if Boelter is a Democrat and he’s killing Democrats, then that makes us the crazies. If, however, Boelter is a crazed MAGA, ginned up by Donald Trump and his violent rhetoric, then that opens up a can of worms that they don’t want to look at. The plain fact is that murdering people in their homes doesn’t comport with normal, partisan political differences. MAGA as a death cult, under Trump, is a fact but it’s not one that they want to look at so they create this. And Trump in particular doesn’t want to look at the Hortman murders at all.

Harris County is in Texas. Boelter did his nefarious deeds in Minnesota. But we can probably expect more of this because MAGA denial is as wide and thick as the Great Wall Of China. I’m sure that school children in future eras will be saying, “Why did the Democrats steal that one election and not any of the others?”

How corrupt and stupid our culture has become. We were not here ten years ago but we are here now. And will we recover from it? Nobody knows what a post-Trump world will look like. We can only speculate. But at some point the tribal hatred and the blatant lies have to stop or there will be more bloodshed. Who will want to run for public office, knowing that to do so is to put a target on your back for the crazies to come after you?
Democracy cannot endure under these circumstances. More will be learned about the pathology of Vance Boelter and his MAGA radicalization. Meanwhile, the best that we can do is hope that there are no more Boelters out there who are ready to go off like ticking time bombs. If Trump had an ounce of class, which he does not, he would have come forward to disparage the Boelter murders and to call for peace and unity. That’s what a leader would do. We don’t have a leader in the White House right now. Woe is us.

I’m not much for religion, but I’ll use this reference anyway for effect. It’s a sickness in the soul of the country. Or maybe a recessive gene that we all have that never makes itself known in our character, for most of us anyway. Let’s call it the abomination gene. For those who leaned this way already, Cadet Bone Spurs activated that gene, causing their mostly normal character to recede and the abomination gene to completely take over. That’s one hypothesis.
