Politics does make strange bedfellows, if any human activity does. I don’t think I’ve agreed on a single vote that Liz Cheney has ever cast in the House, but we seem to be of one mind on the topic of Donald Trump. Cheney can’t believe the cult like adoration accorded the spray-tanned, combover coiffed phony and she joins not only Democrats in that, but the vast majority of clear thinking people in the world. (And that said, do not forget that she voted for him twice, whether the cult makes sense to her or not.)

But even she would be stunned, I think, at the reaction that Trump got when he phoned into the Young Women’s Leadership conference in Texas today.

First, here’s a clip from an interview with Cheney which will air in full on CBS.

That sounds perfectly rational. Now listen to this clip, which does not. I’m sure you will wonder, as I did, if it was really Trump or a Trump impersonator. You may recall how Mike Lindell got fooled by an impersonator and publicly humiliated at one of his outings — maybe it was the cyber symposium, who can remember.

I’ll tell you something. This display here, the fact that 74 million people voted for the bum in 2020 and all that I read everyday convinces me that something horrible has happened to this country. I’m not quite ready to leave it yet, but I do have a friend in Canada who builds apartment complexes, who has offered me a place, and I can always repatriate to Ireland.

On days like today I start to think about those options. My God, we are so divided. And it’s not about Trump. Trump is just the fool that came along at the right time and was in the right place saying all the quiet things out loud. That is his “magic” if you will.

We are this sick and we have been so for a very long time.

  1. Sometimes I wish I’d stayed in touch with a gal from Vancouver twenty or so years ago. She’d come to DC on business periodically and we were introduced through mutual friends at a social gathering. We became pals and that’s a longer story but we weren’t an “item” and eventually she got married to a guy back there and we lost touch. However, several times she tried to convince me to take some time off and fly up there. First because there were all kinds of outdoor places she wanted me to see, but second because she had a friend she truly believed would be nuts about me. And me her. I never went (another long story there – regarding inability to get even a week’s vacation from my job at the time) but even if things hadn’t worked out with that gal maybe my friend and I would have still stayed in touch or I’d have had a larger circle of acquaintances. Including one who might sponsor me moving there!

    • If things get so bad here that we need to flee to Canada, don’t worry, Denis. We’ll all pitch in together. Jesus, the fact that we’re even having this conversation is eerie.
