This is not a surprising development at all. It makes sense. America got sorely let down yesterday by the settlement of the Dominion v. Fox News case for $787.5 million. America was looking forward to six weeks of sensational revelations and testimony by Fox News hosts and owner Rupert Murdoch. We were prepared for a collective cultural catharsis. That didn’t happen.
Instead, Dominion lawyers decided to settle the case, which on a legal level was a sound decision on their part. Dominion lawyers are not the tribunes of democracy. They are the hired guns, out to get money for their clients and they did that.
Rather spectacularly, in fact. Over three quarters of a billion dollars is no small sum of money. The lawyers chose to take the bird in the hand rather than go through the trial and risk a change in the award sought, or go through the appeals process and drag the case out for years. So they settled. But the catharsis that America sought — and needed — was not provided. So Lincoln Project put this together, as a beginning, we hope.

The true tragedy is that Fox News and other tabloids make so much money off of people that they mercilessly mock. Nobody is more critical of hard core right-wingers than right-wing media.

It’s not over until it’s over. Smartmatic has vowed to find out the rest of the dirt that Dominion didn’t. Plus, there are suits pending against Sidney Powell and Rudy Giuliani. The saga continues.
The truly sad part is that the damage is already done. Seeds were sewn by Donald Trump about election interference and Fox News happily ran with that ball because it was good for ratings. Now confidence in our election system has been eroded and who knows what the next shoe is to drop?
The day may come when we long for 2000, hanging chads and Brooks Brothers riots. Cynical? Yes. But it could happen.
