Lincoln Project Nails MAGA GOP ‘Party Of Putin’ While Matt Gaetz Makes No Bones About It

Back in 1956 Nikita Khrushchev famously opined, “We will take you over without firing a shot. We will defeat you from within.” If you listen to Matt Gaetz talking on Newsmax, and all the drivel that comes out of Marjorie Taylor Greene’s mouth, it looks like Khrushchev was indeed right. I don’t know if a future Republican party which had abandoned all principles and now stands for grievance and entertainment is what the former USSR leader had in mind, but that’s what we’ve got.

This is beyond sobering. This is terrifying. We used to be a democratic republic, a constitutional republic with two parties devoted to democratic norms, albeit with different philosophies of the social safety net and the role of government. Those days are gone. Now we have one functioning political party that wants to ensure our way of life continues, and an anti-American, pro-Putin party, which is the MAGA GOP.

Whether the non-MAGA GOP can prevail — assuming there is such a thing as non-MAGA GOP — we don’t know. Right now, today, it looks like Donald Trump is headed to a third run for the White House, even though he’s got more legal baggage than you’ll find in the carousel of any international airport.
