Something caused the explosions on the 13 kilometer Kerch Bridge connecting Russian proper to their stolen possession of Crimea overnight but there is little consensus on what happened, with the official Russian account blaming a truck bomb exploding on the car transport side of the dual vehicular and railroad span, while others claim sabotage was responsible.

I am not an expert, but it seems to me that an explosion on the roadway would not collapse the structural support of the bridge, as most of the power of such a blast would be directed upwards. This theory however, from the Russian perspective, does have its advantages – as it allows accusations of “terrorism” to be leveled and “suicide bombing” language to be introduced into the debate over causality.

“How was this done? Any number of theories are doing the rounds – from a Ukrainian special forces operation to the work of partisans in Crimea, a missile strike, or even a suicide bomb.

“This is a masterpiece of clandestine sabotage,” a former senior British army explosives expert told me.

“A well-planned attack from below may have been the cause,” he said.

“With structural demolition, you always plan a ‘collapse mechanism’ which lets the weight of the structure do the majority of the work.”

Ukrainian officials are giving little away, happy to apply the same level of ambiguity that followed a mysterious attack on the Russian airbase in Crimea in August.“

  4. I see the Ivans are now claiming that it won’t disrupt supplies to their troops in Ukraine and there will be no difficulty keeping them supplied.

    If I recall they were having difficulty BEFORE Kerch Bridge was falling down
