I thought in Trumpty’s new, made “Greater” America all that WOKE stuff would be banished. For damned sure a place like the renowned Kennedy Center, a place he TOOK OVER we wouldn’t be seeing any of that stuff. “Drag” horrifies cultural conservatives. They see it as some dark conspiracy to turn kids gay, and in general pervert American’s minds. So when Trump decided he’d take over as chair of the Kennedy Center Board of Directors and install “righteous”, “god fearing”(?) ‘real Americans’ on the board there’d be no WOKE stuff/artists on the program. Including and especially entertainment that involved Drag. Well, given the list of upcoming shows there’s a great gnashing of teeth and rending of garments in Anti-WOKE America as multiple Drag shows are on the schedule!
This article from Raw Story was a fun way to kick off the morning. It’s short but sure highlights the say one thing while doing something else nature of Trump and his team. Ok, so they will surely work in vomit inducing shows from the likes of Kid Rock, Lee Greenwood and so on. No doubt Lara Trump is demanding a Kennedy Center performing gig too! But there’s be none of that WOKE stuff and Drag got special mention:
The president overthrew the prestigious performing arts center’s board of directors in February, taking over as chairman and vowing to rid it of wokeness — including drag performances.
“Just last year, the Kennedy Center featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth — THIS WILL STOP,” Trump wrote on Truth Social as he announced the purge of the D.C. venue.
That was then. Less than three months later Trumpty is singing a new tune (pun intended – and his singing would still be preferable to Lara’s) so the schedule isn’t going to be so anti-WOKE to after all. Again, I find it funny as hell to see there will be shows that have performers in DRAG highlighted:
But the upcoming season, announced at a ceremony the president attended, contains a lot of performers in drag, the Daily Beast reported.
Take Mrs. Doubtfire, for example — a tale of a man who dresses as a nanny in order to see his children.
And then there’s Chicago, in which Mary Sunshine’s wig is pulled off to expose things are ‘not always as they appear.” And Moulin Rouge’s Baby Doll is a drag queen.
I’ll bet Rudy Giuliani is franticly trying to get Trump to take his phone call this morning. Rudy had a penchant back in the day for skits that had him in Drag. Including at least one with none other than then mere NYC real estate mogul Donald Trump! Ole Rudy is strapped for cash and he’s long past the point where he could find dignity even if someone handed him a dictionary open to the correct page. No matter. Rudy is desperate for money these days. He could whip up a one-man show in a day. It would be nauseating to be sure. On the other hand it at least wouldn’t be Lara!
But let’s return to sort of serious. I don’t think there’s any mystery as to why Trump has backed down. An awful lot of artists have cancelled gigs they were slated for because of the change in management. That no doubt has led to a large number of patrons no longer donating, and also a sharp decline in season-ticket sales. A paucity of visitors roaming around looking at MAGA Art (i.e. blown up Trump trading cards, banners like the Dept. of Agriculture Bldg., various paintings of Trump on velvet and so on) and half-empty venues for performances would have been embarrassing.
As a result, popular shows that even if the biggest name performers won’t do at the Kennedy Center now will still draw crowds WILL go on. Trump is highly unlikely to attend these shows himself. However he will damned sure order some of his top people to show up in the Presidential Box to be photographed. The only question is whether said top officials fighting over attending is because they want to suck up to Trump or they don’t want to get stuck with THAT duty!
For the moment at least MAGA is MAWGA – Make Anti WOKE Go Away. At least when it comes to the Kennedy Center.
