Is Comer Looking For A Way Out of Biden Impeachment?

If you’ve been following the fiasco known as the Biden Impeachment you know that hearings haven’t gone well for either James Comer’s House Oversight Committee which is tasked with the actual investigation (at least after it became “official) or “Gym” Jordan’s Judiciary Committee which took it’s own crack at “getting the goods on the Bidens.” Even with the two of them working together (Jordan also sits on the Oversight Committee) they have face-planted over and over. Even House Republicans have been expressing discontent and sometimes even on the record. Put bluntly, the theme is reminiscent of an entire old-timey Wendy’s Hamburger ad campaign – “Where’s the beef?” There’s no “there” there and everyone knows it. All but the crazies in the House GOP wishes it would just fade away.

According to an article by Mediate it seems possible that Oversight Committee Chair Comer not only feels their pain, but agrees with them. And is looking for an off ramp. To be honest I’ve felt like Comer shares a too widely held Republican trait – a lack of capacity to feel embarrassment or shame. Still, there’s only so many time a guy can intentionally step on a rake and wind up getting whacked in either the face or the “family jewels” and decide they’ve had enough. It’s bad enough to do it even once in the backyard with no one seeing it happen, but having people looking on live on national TV is another thing entirely.

As the linked article indicates through it all Comer and the GOPers (sounds like the name of a warmup band for Lara Trump!) have used their Inspector Javert like pursuit of Biden to fundraise. Now it seems that might be all Comer intends to do at this point. He mailed out a missive earlier this week attacking Democrats for “putting Party over country” by not dropping everything to focus on completing the impeachment and removal of DHS Secretary Alajandro Mayorkas.  (Remember, the first House impeachment vote FAILED, and the second one barely passed)

He’s all worked up that those crazy Senators for inexplicable reasons seem to think actually governing and addressing crucial matters is more important.  It does however ring a bit hollow that House GOPers voted to impeach Mayorkas over the border, yet when the Senate passed over the toughest border legislation any of them had ever seen they chose to table IT. (Because Trump told them to) Anyway, don’t expect Comer to shut down the impeachment inquiry, but rather change the goal. And his mailer (a fundraising pitch of course) explains his proverbial “Plan B:”

“It’s clear that Democrats will choose their party over their country and the truth at every turn. They should be ashamed of themselves. That’s why I am preparing criminal referrals as the culmination of my investigation,” Comer wrote in the email, which was first reported on by NBC News.

“When President Trump returns to the White House, it’s critical the new leadership at the DOJ have everything they need to prosecute the Biden Crime Family and deliver swift justice,” Comer added.

Comer doesn’t come right out and say “impeachment is dead” but he might as well have. Hell, for a while now it’s been doubtful that a vote for any articles of impeachment against Biden would even pass! What’s important is saving face, and of course (as always) raising money. Only now under the guise of having criminal referrals teed up to send to DOJ that a new Trump administration can pursue. Or, if it doesn’t work out that way send some over to DOJ before this Congress shuts down at the end of the year, then engage in all manner of attacks on DOJ and the Biden administration for not pursuing bogus charges! That would probably raise a TON of money for the GOP which they will damn sure be needing, and with a defeated Trump might wind up bringing in a big haul.

Well, it’s too soon to say for certain but the premise of this article which is that Comer is looking for as graceful a way out of the sh*t show he’s put on as he can manage is likely true. There is however a potential fly in the ointment. Or horse fly. Or horse’s ass and that’s Trump. He is major butt-hurt over having been impeached not once but TWICE and worse, had to rely on McConnell giving GOPer’s cover to prevent his conviction in the Senate. And make no mistake if McConnell had taken to the floor and said HE stood by what he said right after Jan. 6 and would vote to convict the two-thirds majority needed would have been gotten with room to spare.

So Trump wants, he craves Biden having to also bear the indignity of being impeached. Even though there’s no chance in hell he’d be convicted. He just wants that line in any history written about Joe Biden. Well, he really wanted Biden to go through THREE impeachment trials. Being the most impeached President in history is a title Trump doesn’t want!  The point is that it will be interesting to see if in the midst of all his other troubles Trump starts howling and demanding the House impeach Biden so he (Trump) can use it as part of his campaign.

That is something House Republicans, the vast majority of them want no part of. Especially those in swing districts. There are already lots of Republicans fearful (and for good reason) they will lose the House in November. Trump demanding an impeachment vote might wind up having an unintended consequence – a few more Republicans resigning and right away and leaving more Democrats than Republicans. Meaning say hello to Speaker Jeffries, months and months before we’d hoped for!

With Trump who knows? I’m just saying that while it’s not just interesting but newsworthy that Comer seems to be taking his foot of the gas pedal of the impeachment truck, this could turn into a major wreck.
